Why would it surprise you?

After all, Canon had the 20MP (6D), 22MP (5D3) and 18MP (1Dx) full-frame sensors at the same time.

And Sony has a 42mp, 36mp, 24mp, and a 12mp.

I just want to know if they've altered the RAW files to get rid of the lossy compression.

Nope.

The 24MP general-purpose and 12MP low-light sensors are sufficiently different not to consider them in the same category, since you can't substitute one with another. On the contrary, the 20MP 6D sensor could have gone into the 5D3 and it would have made little difference.

I did say if I got an a7r the mk2 would follow... I took delivery of the mk1 at 4pm, 2 hours later..... :|

But the price is high and I cannot wait until August. Will get used to this thing and then wait for falling prices. I like the look of the new model, certainly the RAW files I have had from the 5Ds so far have been way less useable than the a7r's...

the A7 and A7R already covered the full sensor in contrast detect though so nothing new with the A7RII in that regard

That's actually not true. Even the contrast detect AF points don't reach fully into the corners. Please see the image on this page (external link) for more info.

One doesn't buy the best sensor on the market in order to lose some of its image quality for the sake of a few, cheap megabytes.

No, they haven't but there may be hope for a firmware upgrade which fixes this problem. Please see one of my recent posts.

If no one beats me to it, I'd be glad to post up some real world shots! Currently I'm on the road so, hopefully it'll be there when I get back!

Well from the youtube flick below, Hitler went on a rant about the 5Ds. It's really funny.
