Last night I had something like 80, this morning only 3.

I assumed I had accidentally hit the clear all button but one notification is 7 days old so I don't think that can be it.

Another notification is showing one new post where there should be many for that thread.

I have run into the same issue. Notifications are very hit and miss for me. I am following this to see what responses will be.

Thanks for the feedback, this is the first problem I have had, been rock solid otherwise.

I was able to more or less catch up by using the followed threads bit in FYEO.

I can not reproduce those hiccups. No changes to notification system has been made in 1.33. ISP-wide content alteration schemes (like bytemobile which is widely used) have been prevented, that should actually make things more stable.

I can not make any guesses, so without being able to reproduce the errors I can not even start to debug the cause. I suspect it's all network related.

Pay attention to XX NEW POSTS count. It will change if you browse pages of threads that it refers to.

I checked the code, and (as designed) the notification read system can remove items only from current thread. CLEAR ALL is the only command that wipes all notifications.

The problem is I cannot replicate it either. For example, I will use this thread. Both you and Lester Wareham had made posts since I last visited, yet no purple notification bar for me. The only way I know for certain if there are new posts or not is to click on "Followed + Own" at the top of the page. Sometimes there will be as many as 8-10 threads with new posts and I might receive 1 notification.

As I have said, probably a network issue. Also, keep in mind that notifications info (the purple bar) does not update every second, but every 15 secs.

Try https://photography-on-the.net …eo.php?show=notifications in another tab and see how purple bar on that page matches to purple bar on top. That page needs to be refreshed manually to see the latest situation.

I clicked that link and there was no purple bar.

I am not sure how it can be a network issue. That means there would have be an issue with not only my wifi, but also my cellular network.

To see if I could narrow it down I have used:

- Safari on a Mac over wifi (I fully deleted and reinstalled to latest version)
- Firefox on Windows 8 over wifi (fresh install of Firefox with no add ons or extensions)
- Firefox for Android over wifi (no add ons or extensions)
- Firefox for Android over cellular network
- Stock Internet browser on Android over cellular network

I logged out of all and only used one of them for 24 hours each. All had the same result of posts being made but no notifications.

You have posted the same thing over and over again and I still say, there is nothing wrong with the notifications for your account.

I just now logged in as you into my developement system (which is an identical copy of this one) with Safari and posted to threads you have set to notify, all worked as designed and notifications appeared normally. The code is simple, if you load a page that is notified after the notification happens, the notification is cleared for that page. It works as designed.

I have checked server logs and your IP requests and receives data from notification script normally.

The problem is not in this end, and without being able to be there checking your browser with some debuggin tools there is nothing I can do about it.

Only thing that comes to mind is that on some of your devices there is an app/browser that retrieves POTN pages for offline reading. That would explain the notifications disappearing as the pages get read by that app/browser when you are not personally online.

We should continue this in PM.

I'll PM you.

Until now it has been 100% reliable - a very valuable feature.

I ran into something interesting recently -- I did a generic Empty Cache with Chrome and all of a sudden Web apps began misbehaving, including POTN and FaceBook. I had to go back and turn on some functions, scripts and such, so things would behave!!

Yes, Javascript is required for all modern sites to work. Why Chrome disabled it on clearing cache, I have no idea. Make sure your Chrome is updated to latest version.

Well, it's good to know this stuff, since it's "standard" to advise people to clear their cache! Maybe we should check this out, maybe adjust our advice!

Ok. I will PM you but I'd just like to put this here first. This is what I see when I log on. No purple bar at the top, yet you can clearly see that going into Followed+Own, there is new posts.

I have added some debug tracing code to your account so that I can see what is going on. The problem is not in writing notifications to your account, that I have also verified. I can perhaps see something when you next log in.

Some good news, too: from all this work trying to find errors in notification code: I found a cause to Lester's problem. It was related to deleting posts and removing that single post from notifications. The bug was that the whole thread was removed from notification lists, not just that single post, grrr. It is now fixed and fix applied here.
