I just picked up a Canon refurb SL1. The pop up preflash makes a sound like a few mosquitos are frying in the circuit. Flash exposure seems correct.

Anyone else have this?

Thanks.

Very normal. The flash is firing intermittently as a focus aid.

Thanks Mark.

The light crackling sound made me think something was wrong. That makes sense.

You're welcome John. That noise is very annoying. They used to use a constant red light(still do in upper-level external flashes) as a focus aid but several years ago they decided to save $2.00 per camera and use intermittent flash instead. You can turn it off in the menu if you wish. I do and just use an external flash if I need focus assistance.

I find the strobing preflash to be far more annoying than the sound it makes... :)

Thanks Mark. I've hardly ever used a pop up in doors and usually use a speedlight on top so I was weighing the option of just keeping it anyway even if it was a defect. Glad to know it's normal.

Yes. The sound is the much lesser of two evils now that I know it's normal. The first time it happened I thought it was short and would be smelling burnt circuitry.

Kind of like a fourth of July sparkler. ( :
