Why these loons are called common is beyond me; what magnificent birds they are. Sometimes, when we are anchored out on the lake, one or two will swim by us, not concerned in the least by our presence. This happened a couple days ago when a pair repeatedly dove on fish within close range.

This species are not at all "common" in Europe but really great photos! I love the velvetly plumage of the divers/loons and the shine you've got here is fantastic!
