Hi everyone,

I'm unsure whether the 'People' forum is the most appropriate place to post this series - Mods, please feel free to move to a more appropriate forum if not!

I have been working on an ongoing documentary project covering the social, environmental and economic issues which lead to sex trafficking in some of the the remote villages in Mae Hong Son Province, in Northern Thailand.

I would greatly appreciate your feedback on these images if you get a chance. As this is an ongoing project, I will be returning to these and new villages over the coming months to continue documenting their situation.

The current edit of the project to date is on my website at the following link, if you would like to see more:

This link also has a lot more detail about the issues facing these communities. The captions for the images are also useful if you would like to understand more.

Thanks
Karl

Very nice images with exception of the one with the post in front of the girl's head. Some quick checking around the net suggests that there are strict laws against prostitution involving girls under eighteen though the age of consent is fifteen. Better education is always good but from what you describe it appears the root of the issue is a culture that condones parents who sell their children for sex. Since the laws regarding prostitution of underage girls appear to be quite strict I would imagine there are tough laws against pimping underage girls that these parents can be charged with. Having read your material I look at the grandmother and the other adult women in your photos in a new light. If they sell their children they are criminals and should absolutely be prosecuted. Anyway fine photographs as I said. Now you need to get a couple of shots of the money exchange.

I can't imagine a more worthy project. Compelling photos.

Some questions:
1) how long is their obligation? Are they ever released, or do they endure this repeated (100-160 times per month) rape until they die from disease and despair?
2) are they accepted back afterwards? Is there any expectation of their return? Are they at least viewed as having helped the family?
3) at what age does this start? Not sure I really want to know...
4) while education is great, how does that stop the parents from selling them before they have value from the education? Is there a return on investment argument being made to the parents? It would seem educating the girls might get done if the parents were paid to send them to school. Then the long term payoff could be realized.
5) how many generations has this been going on? Was there a trigger to start this?

Or just shoot the parents that willingly sell their kids... thats my visceral reaction.
