Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Jul 19, 2015 10:46 | #6972 And a few I was happy with. #2 1/640, f/5.6, iso 100, 560mm #3 1/640, f/5.6, iso 100, 560mm full screen this shot is awesome, may even be my new desktop #4 1/1250, f/4.5, iso 320, 400mm so lap 2 at 1:06 at this point - pretty quick I reckon #5 1/500, f/5.6, iso 160, 560mm behind a row of people approx 3 mtrs from the fencing! #6 1/640, f/5.6, iso 200, 540mm 'on it' .DAVID. Jul 19, 2015 10:47 | #6973 David Stallard wrote in post #17636499 ![]() Question guys n girls. I have noticed lately (more so since I got the 200-400) that when I pan a race car / bike the focus locks on and stays pretty well on subject BUT if the subject is coming at me or away from me with my thumb firmly pressed on the BBF button I can see the focus lock on then off then on - it's almost like it's pulsing, which is annoying as I don't 'machine gun' shoot you can almost guarantee that 90% of the time when I press the shutter button it will be when the focus is off. I have tried each and every case setting on the body and have tried with IS on and off on the lenses - Canon 70-200 2.8 MKII and Canon 200-400 f/4 with 1.4 extender. You would expect that with nearly 14k of set up that a simple shot of a motorcycle going away from you at the apex of a bend would be bang on every time - I gave up after 1 out of 30 came out almost sharp. Any help or advice before I lose my patience completely. Thanks in advance .DAVID. Your success rate will depend on a number of variables, including DoF which is the first thing I'd suggest. If you're asking the AF to work wide open at f/4 on a close subject which is moving quickly, it is going to have a much harder time locking onto something with a relatively shallow DoF than it would for a slower moving subject with an aperture of, say, f/16 which has a much greater DoF. If it's any consolation I use the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II, the 300mm f/2.8 IS II and the 500mm f/4 IS II for moving subjects (usually birds in flight) and find the same problems. The same applies to better photographers than me whom I've worked with. The faster the subject the lower the success rate. In the case of a small fast subject coming towards you/ moving away from you, if I get a sharp in focus shot I'll count that as a bonus rather than the expected standard. Much better results are to be had panning a moving subject moving at approx 90 degrees relative to your position. If I was shooting something like a Heron flying past me at 90 degrees I'd expect most shots to be in focus. Is that any help?

Jul 19, 2015 10:53 | #6975 One other thought, which IS setting are you using? Personally I've had most success with setting 3 which only locks in the IS as you take the shot.
