They are both in serious need of updates. The 50/1.4 is really long in the tooth and now finds itself competing with Canon's own latest 50/1.8 STM which closed the gap a bit as compared to the 50/1.8 II with the addition of more (and rounded) blades. And while the 50/1.2 holds onto its widest aperture advantage, this lens too has serious competition now from Sigma's 50mm f/1.4 Art lens; Sigma really upped their game with the Global Vision line, and have both Canon and Nikon playing catch up.
I disagree that the need to revise the 50L is "serious." In that extracted quote, I was really just hinting at the point that there are two kinds of 50L buyers: (i) the ones that want or need f/1.2, and (ii) the ones who don't need f/1.2 but cannot live with the shortcomings of the current EF 50 f/1.4. Of course, a portion of the latter group go the way of the 50 Art. It's common knowledge that we're way beyond the point of needing a new EF 50 1.4. So, assuming a new intermediate 50 is around the corner, Canon might steal back some Sigma shooters with a successful revision, but it will, no doubt, also do so at the expense of some 50L sales. Therefore, I think Canon should revise the intermediate and luxury 50mm lenses in short order of one another.
