More Haleakala.

Haleakala crater at 3 am. Brightest moon I've ever seen. You could easily hiked without a flashlight! Kapalaoa Cabin.

Thats excellent! I plan to hike it when I am in Maui in a couple of weeks, looking forward to it!

With the observatory essentially blocked to visitors, can anyone recommend a good dark sky on the Northwestern side of the Big Island?
My wife and I are going there for a nice getaway, and I would like to get out one night and take some star photos.

Also, what about lush and green? I know that the Big Island is quite rocky, but are there any recommended places to visit with that 'classic' Hawaiian green foliage?

Thanks.

Mauna Loa. Road is paved all the way to 11,155 feet. Directions here (external link) (from Hilo). It's popular for astronomers and astrophotographers (external link).

I came across this beautiful old girl in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii, and there was no way any "modern style" photo could do her age and beauty justice. She needed the photo to proudly show her age and coolness. Woodys were a huge part of the early 50's & 60's surf culture
