I havent posted on here in 8 years! wow.

Any way, is there some software where I can just enter the lens used and it will correct its faults (sharpening, etc) Hoping this doesn't sound nuts. I remember using something in the past that had lens correction profiles.

Kits lens for a canon xti. My dad used the camera for a continental road trip and I want the pics to look their best.

Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) does that on raw files in the Lens tab.

Yep, DPP has it as well as Light Room and SOME other RAW processors. However, the photos MUST be in RAW format for any of these to work.

I believe this tech was pioneered by DXO Labs, but it is included in a number of other RAW converters now including as mentioned Canon's own software, and a host of other RAW converters, Capture 1, Aftershot, etc..

Lightroom works like a charm with lots of pre-programmed lenses.

DXO also offer a lens correction option, which I seem to recall will work with RGB as well as RAW files. The DXO product uses data from lens and camera tests. Great if they have tested your particular camera/lens combination, not much help if they haven't.

I have DXO 8 and the lens corrections only work on RAW files. Perhaps improvements have been made since they are now on version 10. They may not have every camera/lens combination available, but when they do have them, rest assured that they work with devastating accuracy.

Ok. I don't think my dad has been using RAW mode which leaves me with only the light room option I believe.

As far as I know, DXO has worked with JPG as well as RAW, at least since version 4. DXO Labs does claim that their noise reduction technology and HDR do work better with RAW. And their "PRIME" noise reduction, which works really well for me on high ISO images, works only with RAW.

The newer bodies have this in camera. Don't even need to do it in post.

I stand corrected. I just tried it with JPEGs and found that as long as the EXIF is intact then lens corrections using the Lens/Camera modules is applied. Thanks for the new(to me) info.:-)

Before there was DxO, before there was Lightroom, before there was DPP, there was PTLens. Still works great with rendered RGB files (no Raw) and has the largest database in the business.

Really? Wow thats cool.

What I *really* had in mind when I made this post was about sharpness. My dad is using the kit 18-55 that came with the xti. I included the nifty 50 but I doubt he'll use it.

That would be cool if software could get rid of all the softness of a lens.
