From my experience and seeing it with the naked eye, that's actually how it looks.

I'm not exactly sure why, but I've shot reflections and had the result looking both with and without trails as in shot 1 and 3 of my original post. I assume it has to do with the angle of camera to the light source, but I haven't proven this one way or the other and this is just a guess.
