Just a heads-up on those interested in the Rovelight, they are in stock now. Mine shipped yesterday. Excited!

I'm sad to report that I can no longer recommend Rovelights. Although some people have had great luck with the transmitter, it just became a deal breaker for me. I have returned both of my units. You can read my reasons here:

pursang - thanks for your informative post. It's obvious the Roveleight doesn't work for you. I think it's a fact the provided trigger doesn't work for anyone on a consistent basis.

However, they are really the only game in town for a Sony shooter who wants 500+ power and HSS. As long as I use a third party trigger (Odin in my case) they trigger consistently in normal mode and HSS. Yes, I can't reliably control the power from afar which I can do with my Godox units but they work in a consistent and reliable manner.

Mark I read your post. Can I ask you a question. Were you only using the Rovelight's transmitter on your camera and trying to hypersync? In your final testing it appears that way. I only ask because in order to hypersynch these strobes you need to use an ettl trigger like your Odins. They will not hypersync with only the stock triggers.

flowrider,
No for HSS I was at first using a CellsII-C with the Rove's transmitter attached to the Cells hot shoe. When I replaced the Rove/Cells with the Odins that setup was bulletproof and allowed me to shoot HSS at any reasonable distance. But adjusting the light power with the Rove's transmitter was just not acceptable. My issue was not HSS, but the Rove's horrible and inconsistent transmission/reception.

This is a BTS film of my session where I first began to have Rovelight transmitter issues. As is pretty clear, running into problems like that in a very fluid shoot is not fun.

After reading through this thread and wanting to incorporate HSS into my shoots, I'm thinking that the Rovelight RL 600 might be the way to go. Just wanted to confirm a few things to make sure I'm not missing anything in my planning.

I shoot w/ a canon 5dm3 and as far as modifiers, I use the new Cheetah RB-120 (external link), fotodiox 36" octa (external link) , and PCB 22" BD (external link) (mainly). From what I read, there are two options; Flashpoint mount or Bowen mount. I read on flashhavoc (external link) that the Bowen mount seems to be a bit more favored so I'm thinking of going with that. Here's my list to make sure I have everything to work smoothly.

Anything I'm missing or should consider?

bowen speedring insert (external link) - Do I need Bowen specific speedring adapter as well? The speedring for my fotodiox supports AB and previous replies said Bowen insert would work. Just wanted to make sure.

YN 622c triggers (external link) for HSS

Is it worth using the YN-TX to adjust the flash delay or will the regular YN622s work just fine? Any preference between the YN622s and the Cells II? Also, just to confirm, I won't be able to mount my PCB BD right? And if so, any known work around?

Definitely go with the Bowens mount. You have many more choices of modifiers. As for the PCB BD it will depend on if the one you have has an interchangeable ring or not. If so just put a Bowens ring to fit it. The PCB BD that I had did not have one.

If you are mixing these with Godox / Cheetah-light v850/860, AD/CL180,360,600 units, then the Cells IIc are the best option as you can then trigger all with just one type, esp if using HSS.

If using the Cells IIc then you will need a 3.5-3.5mm sync cord, with the YN622C a PC Sync cord is needed - this is to direct connect to the RL and leaves the stock trigger in the pocket for power & model light control, you will not need a PC hotshoe.

The Cells IIC hotshoe will also fire the RL remote trigger, I have found it to be reliable in the studio, but on location then I always direct connect a 3rd party trigger as generally this is when HSS is needed anyway.

As others have stated the Bowens mount is the most versatile between the two options.

They are great value, very portable and the battery lasts, even under heavy power pops.

My partner who is a filmmaker did a BTS video of the ballet session. You can see the environments in which I was working. Clearly it's not in a studio where radio signals can bounce off walls and ceilings. I had my aerospace electrical engineer pal look at the transmitter's guts and his words, "It's lucky this thing works at all given the internal antenna!" Anyway I'm not going to beat a dead horse. If they work for you FANTASTIC because the light itself is solid. But for my work I have to have a remote to adjust power settings. I initially meter everything, but on the fly I adjust power quite a bit to get the nuances I'm looking for in the image.

So I've returned both Roves and replaced them with Priolite MBX 1000 HotSyncs. Yup they are five times the cost of the Roves, but are well worth the price for my work. Plus they are the only current strobes that work in HSS with the Pentax 645Z which eliminates the need for me to wait until they produce leaf shutter lenses. I actually doubt I'd buy leaf lenses now. In studio I use Einsteins with his CyberCommander sytem. Remarkable lights and a great value. I always laugh when folks poopoo Paul's Einsteins. They have never let me down. And his customer services is the Nordstrom of the camera lighting industry. None better.

Honestly I'm surprised you didn't go with the super expensive lights to begin with! With your clients and amazing work I'm sure you needed the best and most reliable gear.
