My girlfriend has convinced me that Chipper needs a playmate... so we've been browsing adoption centers...

No, we didn't. We've been looking at a few different ones, we needed to get Chipper's shots up to date first (we just did last week) and last weekend we both got sick with a stomach bug so never got a chance to go look.

After all that, just an hour ago we saw a tiny little Calico sitting in our back yard... after a few frantic laps around the perimiter of our yard we managed to catch him (after a few scratches and a bite), so tomorrow we'll figure out whether or not he'll be staying with us He's about the size Chipper was when we found him.

In an unrelated matter, I have a question for David A.
Before you jumped on to Sony. You were a canon 5d3 shooter (and now canon 5ds).
You were using manual lenses such as the Otus or 21ZE long before the days of focus peaking and all that. How'd you do it? Just eyeballing it in the viewfinder?
I'm seriously considering the 5ds and making a move back to Canon. But I'd really like to have a few options for manual glass (Rokinon, Zeiss).
I know this is completely out of place in this thread, LOL. But I figured there was a good chance David would see it.

Extremely nervous or feral? Having done some TNR and rescue work, I can tell you that some cats will never be socialized to the point of being a standard-deviation house cat.

I also have rescued many cats, feral and otherwise, and sorry to disagree WhyFi, but they all converted into lords and ladies of the manor very quickly, lol. (Once they realised that |I was a mere servant, that is)

Not sure yet, she can't be more than 10 weeks old, likely younger. She got quite the scare running around the yard last night, so we'll see.

She came out of the kennel to eat, she's now sitting in a little enclosed pet bed and seems calm, but still not coming out to see us. We'll probably take her to a shelter tomorrow.

It make take her a while to warm up; I would keep trying but then I'm a cat nut. If you decide to take her to a shelter, pleases make sure it's not a high kill establishment

We did Trap-Neuter-Release and, when appropriate, facilitated foster care and adoption for several colonies (ie hundreds of cats) in Brooklyn. I can assure you that your experiences aren't universal; it's silly and counterproductive to suggest that all cats can be socialized. If all of yours converted "very quickly," then they weren't feral, they were strays. Ferals under 8-10 weeks stand a good chance of being socialized to humans, but even then it may be a bit of a process, with times of frustration, and it's not something blithely undertaken. The older the ferals are when you finally intervene, though, the less likely it becomes that they'll ever be comfortable giving and receiving affection with people; if they do get to that point, it could take a very, very long time to get there.

I'm all for making a good effort at helping an animal and finding companionship at the same time, but the reality is that many of the animals in shelters are there because their former owners weren't realistic about the kind of commitment they were undertaking.

My sister actually tamed a feral cat when she was younger. I don't know how old the cat was, but she was an adult, and it took all summer to get her to the point where my sister could take her to the vet to be spayed and get her shots. I was able to pet her a grand total of maybe half a dozen times, and most animals love me. And despite being tamed, she had to spend 2-4 weeks at the start of summer running away and being feral and not seeing us (and often coming back with notched ears or an infection).
