I just picked up a Canon 85L refurb, in stock on Canon's website for $1599. ߘ Just thought I'd pass it on!

I've been waiting for these to come back in stock at Canon. Picked one up yesterday.

I had been waiting for a few months as well, and I almost bought a used one locally for slightly more than this a few days ago. Then I lucked up and found that they were in stock. According to CPW, they had been out of stock for roughly 18 months prior to now. I figured since Canon now has 1yr warranties on their refurbished items, this was a no brainer.

Not sure where you got that info, it's slightly incorrect :)

They were last in-stock on April 7th, 2015, which is 17 weeks ago. We see this lens occasionally restocked, about 10-15 times in the last year, but each time has only been a handful of lenses. We were definitely surprised to see 60 copies restocked all at once. There are still 44 left...

Oops, maybe I got the weeks and months things mixed up, or read the wrong line... since I read it on CPW.

I ordered one too, also with the %10-off code for $1439. It arrived today! :-)

This was my first time buying a refurbished item direct from Canon, rather than B&H, and I was surprised to see it arrive in an EOS PowerShot VIXIA box. Packed well though, box inside another box with lots of big bubblewrap, so no issues.

Good, ... I think. Interesting that so many of this version of this lens were released to Canon refurb' retail at once.

Conjecture: Did Canon tech find a software or hardware solution to a previously unsolved common functional issue with this lens ...that rose to the level of replacement or reimbursement ...that had been previously un-solved since the release of this version?

The lenses were probably not refurbished. Sometimes they just dump lenses.

I forgot to input the promo code (completely my fault). When I contacted Canon customer service they refused to credit the account despite me being fully eligible for the discount. Shot an email off to Canon VP and had the credit in 24 hours.

Sometimes it boggles my mind that simple things and in my opinion, good customer service, like this have to be elevated to that level to get action.

I asked two different Canon customer service people what exactly constitutes refurbished, and they both told me the same thing: anything that comes back from a retailer is inspected and sold as refurbished, including overstock, and that most of the time no repairs or replacements are required, and everything sold this way is indistinguishable from new. Refurbished might also include items whose packaging was damaged before even leaving the warehouse.

In cases like this lot of 60 lenses becoming available at once, it's overstock that is reboxed into less attractive packaging so that it does not complete directly (and unfairly) with the full retail sales channels. The original retail packaging does have some small effect on resale value, but no box is worth the $560 savings this deal offered. For $1439, I wouldn't even mind if my lens came in a Nikon box :-P

I had been checking stock on this lens religiously and then for whatever reason I stopped looking...figures there were a bunch in stock when I wasn't looking. I want to get this lens with my employee discount ($1,234.35) before I decide to change jobs.
