Finally remembered to take a setup shot. Setup shot taken from the reverse angle as its pretty tight to see under the softbox. There is a black pillow case draped over a box just out of frame on the bottom.

Great ingenuity on the flash and great photo.

Tamron 180mm macro, and I often use a Kenko 2.0x TC with it, allows for 2:1 at 18 inches distance (360mm).

My 180mm and 2.0x TC report as a 360mm when I use them together (was not used on that jumper image, that was the naked 180mm). I don't involve crop factors since I use this setup on full frame, APS-C and APS-H interchangeably. It's a physical 180mm or physical 360mm focal length.

The 18 inches is the minimum focus distance of the lens. And that remains that way even with the TC, so it becomes a 360mm physical lens with a MFD of 18 inches, which achieves up to 2:1 magnification.

I assume you were thinking that 18 inches and 360mm were being talked about as a conversion and not as the physical lens and it's MDF?

Very best,

That is where the confusion starts: focal length is normally expressed in millimeters while distance from the subject by some are still given in imperial units. Why don't we go all metric? Much easier and much more consistent and less confusion.

Yes, I was, due to the proximity of the numbers. Thanks for clarifying.

That's an interesting backdrop you have. Are those actually light reflecting "sparkles" or is that in the print?

Heya,

New setup today. We mowed the field so there was lots of hay out. Naturally we had to go play in it after the heat came down a notch (Florida!).

Trying a 60" silver/black umbrella (Impact) instead of my 48" EzPro Octa. It's bigger, lighter weight, and a lot more portable and easy to manage. Plus, I really *really* like the idea of using it to bounce at high power out in the sun (which it did well at!) because it lets me have larger working room (this is a big deal as my latest subject doesn't' sit still, at all, I mean *not at all* for even a micro-second, hah). I still like the 48" octa. But I'll try using this 60" umbrella more. It's just so much easier to use in terms of carrying it, moving it, changing angles, etc. When you're a one-man-crew, every break to make it easier is a god send in the heat.

By the way, can't remember who recommended it to me, but someone recommended me the 60" Impact umbrella, and it did fit the Rovelight perfectly (my Westscotts didn't fit, grr). So thanks to you sir, whom ever you are.

So, current setup:

Rovelight 600B (shooting in HSS, at 1/4th to 1/8th power, in this session as bounce off black backed silver 60" umbrella)
Impact 60" Silver/Black/White Umbrella (silver inner, white outer, black cover)
Cheetah Stand Boom + Counter weight (water bottles!)
Yongnuo YN622c's (pc sync cable used; unit velcro'd to the light; HSS in use)
Canon 5Dc (generally shooting at 1/1000s, F2.8, ISO 100 for most of these)
Canon 85 F1.8 @ F2.8
