Photographer Killed on Train lines. (Fresno, Ca.)

From Fresno Bee tonight:-

A male photographer was struck and killed by a train about 5 p.m. Thursday during a photo session near H Street and Stanislaus Street in downtown Fresno, Fresno police Sgt. Paul Preston said.

The photographer, 25, and his female model were attempting to capture a southbound train in the background of their photos. The man failed to notice an approaching northbound train and was struck and killed at the scene. Neither the woman nor any passengers on the train were injured, Preston said.

Train tracks...stay away and stay alive.

I was surprised by a train a few years ago while standing about 100 feet away from the tracks taking a photo. I was surprised at how silent it was until it passed by me.

If I'm taking pictures near tracks my rule of thumb is be as close to a crossing gate as possible. By me, they blow their horns even if the gates go down. That way you know they're coming. But rarely do I take photos on tracks away from the gates.

I do a lot of those.

Here's a couple of 'Meh' shots. Something I was interested in getting was a down low shot between the rails but last minute I decided I'd put the camera on the rail and took a few shots. That first one was the best angle I took on the rails.
