Aug 18, 2015 09:41 | #273 Was out at a very small wedding industry event here in Toronto by a start up event supplies business. I dropped in with my wedding officiant fiance and young daughter (the 6yr old I'm using the test the A7Rii Continuous Focus Tracking in the other thread I started). I decided to bring along the A7Rii with the 40mm pancake and just shoot a few things like a tourist would shoot - use the rear display tilted up & shoot from the hip. I am happy to report that the 40mm had no problems in low light locking on right away virtually every time. I tested out manual focus (programmed the C2 button for magnification) and it was very easy to do quickly. I left the camera in AWB and the colours are way wrong from the real colours, which were easy to correct, but the lights were really funky colors similar to certain receptions so I just left them. IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/wydoco Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Observations - it was nice to have a tiny camera (A7R2 with 40mm) - it focused perfectly in low light - once you start shooting like a tourist from the hip it is a little addicting and fun - i never shoot with Live View with the 5D3 but I can see in a reception type environment using the Sony with the tilt screen to get a different variety of shots in a more discrete fashion - think I'm going to pick up the 28F2 and have a really light setup for a non flash reception setup - with my experiments so far with the 70-200 F2.8II, I have pretty much ruled the camera out as a main wedding camera (never thought it was going to be), but it definitely can be used for portraits and I think will excel in a roaming dance floor type camera - a reception with either a 35L or 50L on a 5D body with a flash to bounce or trigger OCF and a A7R2 with a fast prime for natural funky wedding light might make a perfect reception setup Last picture taken by my daughter and 'her' favourite 40mm pancake lens (a little editing by me in LR and PS) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() https://flic.kr/p/xdBmzL https://flic.kr/p/xdHwnR https://flic.kr/p/xvNWeP https://flic.kr/p/wydoco Great first impressions. I too never shot my DSLRs in live view, they're just too slow and clunky, moving AF points is a painful experience and there's too much shutter lag. Maybe for landscape or tripod, but for general shooting it's a no go. Also having the tilt screen does give new perspectives. Most of my dslr shots of my 2 yr old are from the top looking down angle. With a tilt screen I'm able to shoot eye level to here and bring a whole new view on her. Sure I could crouch or bend over, but my back wouldn't like it and by the time I went down on one knee she's probably moved to another place. Current Gear: Sony RX1RII

Exactly - and why the 100 macro is an IS lense - and why the new Canon 24-70 F4 with IS and a macro mode is a growing favourite amongst certain wedoing photogs in spite of only being F4. Eddie xpfloyd lookalike More info | Aug 22, 2015 12:52 | #283 wallstreetoneil wrote in post #17678736 tested out my first and currently only native Sony lens - the 28F2 makes for a small and light setup - basically sticks out exactly as much as the 40mm pancake with the MB4 adapter i bought this lens because I wanted a native lens that would autofocus for video - and I wanted to test out the Eye Autofocus First of all the Eye Auto Focus - before I speak to how good it is, I will say that it doesn't 'really' work with the 28F2 because you have to be pretty close to a human to make an eye big enough for the camera to recognize an eye as an eye (no surprise here as you don't generally grab a 28mm lens to take close ups of people - if you do you are basically in their personal space - that said, if you allow a person to get close so that it is in portrait type distance, the eye AF immediately grabs the eye - really incredible - in fact, totally f'ing awesome - basically a game changer (and I'm a Canon guy but this feature is really amazing) - the moment Sony releases a 24-70 & 70-200 F2.8 native lenses they are going to fly off the shelf because this Eye AF is going to have wedding photogs really interested - ergonomically you really have to assign the AEL button to Eye AF so your thumb can hold it down (like Back Button AF on a Canon) - because of this, i really wish there was a 2nd similar type button (like the * button on a 5D3) so you could still have a the separate ability to do BB AF ergonomically (i.e. the next gen camera they really need to do a few things to make it better) - I use to think the without any doubt that IBIS was the single best feature about this camera (i.e. low SS on lenses like the 85L) but Eye AF really jumped up my list and eventually when I add some kind of longer FL lens I will be using it I'm not really a landscape person but I was killing 15 minutes waiting for my partner so I walked around an office complex with nice gardens to see how I could use the 28F2 - the lens is not tack sharp at F2 so I stopped it down to F2.8 for a few thin DoF shots and then shot it otherwise at F5.6 and F8 - I also tried a shot directly into the sun and then tried to see what I could recover in the scene (the red chair picture - pretty good I would say) I decided to choose this lens over the similarly priced and sized 35F2.8 because I want to be able to use the 4K video in Super 35 mode because it is far cleaner at high ISOs so the FL will work better. Sony lenses are not cheap but of all the lenses this one for sure seems like a good value. The LR profile corrects some pretty severe distortion but such is modern technology so it doesn't faze me that the lens suffers from it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() https://flic.kr/p/xFhcZx https://flic.kr/p/wJpG8v https://flic.kr/p/xoEBB5 Good informative post, thanks for posting it Leica M11 | Leica Q2 | Sony α7RV
