Mt. Scott

A couple from the Wichita Mountains NWR in SW Oklahoma. First one is from the top of Mt. Scott. The second is Post Oak Lake. Actually this like is now (officially I think) known as Treasure Lake but it is filled by Post Oak Creek. What they now call Post Oak Lake is a few yards away on the other side of a trail head and is not filled by Post Oak Creek. I think there was an error on a map a few years ago that has now been standardized. When you ask refuge personnel about it, they act a bit embarrassed. So I keep calling it Post Oak Lake because I think that's the correct name.

Especially like the one of the lake. I intend to get down that way eventually ("its on the list"). Lots of sign errors in OK, like the "Natural Falls Next Right" sign thats a half mile past the turn.

Natural Falls is on my list but it's a long drive from OKC. Which way does that falls face? Should I plan morning or evening?

Same for me for the Wichita's as I'm North of Tulsa. With all the rain this year the over growth was real heavy , so it is almost like a cave at the base of the falls. It faces WSW but a very narrow ravine not very open, it is a very nice park. I have not been there late in the day, but I am think Fall late afternoon, early evening might make some interesting light.

Here is one from the base. It was busy ( I think it was the only place in Oklahoma not flooding), so no room for a tripod. This was about 10:30, I really think late afternoon might be better or noon with an overcast which is what I was hoping for on this day, but didn't happen.

That's Natural Falls in Natural Falls SP. It's not in the Wichita's or the Ouachita's. It's near the Arkansas border in the NE part of the state close to Stillwell or Siloam Springs, AK. It's as tall as Turner Falls in the Arbuckles but not as big.

I don't know of a waterfall in the Ouchitas (I'm sure there must be some). There is an interesting falls in the Wichitas. Post Oak Falls is a short but difficult, rugged hike following the Charrons Gardens trail back from Post Oak Lake. Just follow the creek. It's about 30 feet tall over a very steep rock face into a beautiful shaded pool. In the summer it often is dried up but I bet it's running full strength this summer. There is also a Little Post Oak Falls which is little more than cascade but also very pretty.

The nicest falls I know of in Oklahoma is Price Falls on the Falls Creek campground near Davis on I-35. It's across I-35 from Turner Falls. It's not very tall but very broad with a huge flow of water and lots of travertine rock surrounding it. It is also pretty wooded so in full sun it is very dappled and hard to photograph. Best time is on a nice overcast (not the high hot kind) or at day's end after the sun has gone behind the rocks. The campground charges for photographs but it's only $10 and well worth it. MUCH thanks for all the info. Especially the Price Falls and POst Oak. I am going up to the Wichita Mtn WR in late October. First visit to it. Again thank you for the info. If you ever get down around Galveston BAy area and need some local info stuff just drop me note.

Late October is perfect for fall color in the Wichitas and the Arbuckles. We've had a very wet year so, if there is no early freeze, it ought to be a great year for color. Enjoy your trip. Maybe we'll bump into each other. Here's a shot of Post Oak Lake in the fall as well as Post Oak Falls. Not usually a huge flow over that falls but a very interesting landscape.
