Henry's Extended Life Plan

I am purchasing a new Nikon D7200 body today at my local Henry's camera store, this is my first new camera purchase and was wondering if the "Henry's Extended Life Plan " is worth the extra money or are most new bodies reliable enough that this would not be needed. Thanks for any experiences on this.

My 2 cents. I don't believe ANY extended warranty is worth the money. Insurance, for the most part, is a huge rip-off.

things with moving parts (motors/engines) MIGHT be worth considering an extra warranty, but if a piece of electronics is going to fail prematurely it is generally going to fail in the warranty period, assuming a typical one year warranty and that you actually use it a lot.

I almost never buy extra warranties, but the two times i did, i use it. One was a humidifier i ran all day, every day, outside my newborn kids' rooms all winter that failed that spring. And the other was Apple Care for iPhones that my wife and I bought … we thought that the kids might smash them. Turns out that my wife's phone's wifi went to crap and she got a new iPhone for free.

neither of my Canon cameras have had extra warranties, and both are still running strong. If you are going to be bonking your camera around a lot, or are just a complete klutz, you might want to consider it.

I'm with GeoKras, extended warranties are almost never worth the cost. The first 12 months is covered under the manufacturer warranty when most of the manufacturer type defects are going to arise.

Thanks for the feedback, good points by all. I'll pass on the extended coverage and buy a good large size sd card.

extended store warranty programs work like this, you are hedging your bets the device will fail, the store is betting it wont. these warrantys have been around forever, the stores dont lose money, they make it.

That is how all insurance works. Nobody offers coverage they don't make money on.

Stores make vastly more profit on extended warranties than they do on the sale of the actual camera, which is why they sell them. That in itself isn't bad except that...
1. As mentioned above you are unlikely to need to make a claim as failure will likely occur within warranty,
2. The warranties are over priced. You can get the same cover added to your home insurance for far less money.
3. Also, as mentioned above, if you paid by CC you probably have extra cover already (and can't make multiple claims for the same item from different insurers).

I found this in my Credit Card agreement, so simply purchasing with my credit card seems to work for this purchase.

I've had 4 DSLRs and kept each beyond their warranty date and never had a problem with any of them. There'd probably be a disclaimer clause for every particular problem!!
