Found a little beef at the Iowa State Fair. This is the Big Bull this year. He weighs in at a touch over 2800 pounds. His musculature was massive.

Wow, that's nice and sharp. I've only just got mine and still trying to get to grips with it. My pics are a bit softer than with my 24-105.

I noticed that too. very soft wide open. About f3.5 is where it becomes acceptable for mine. Is this normal for this lens?

Not sure, I'm hoping it's just me still getting to grips with the lens. I don't know if it needs any sort of micro-adjustment or not.

I had a similar learning experience with the lens on my 7D. The lens itself is designed for lower resolution full frame sensors (hence the MK.II release relatively recently), so when throwing it on a crop it will not seem as sharp/crisp as some sample images may seem. Some lots of the MK.I lens are also known to be relatively soft, although I am not sure what date codes are affected.

Focus is key to judging your copy's sharpness at F/2.8. F/2.8 isn't nearly as wide as 1.8 or 1.4 primes, but at wide end the plane of focus is surprisingly narrow. Go out and take more pictures!
