Very nice Grizz!
Thanks Peter, I've never seen one hunting, only resting or in flight. We have lots of them right now. Let me know how you're Tammy does when you get it back, I think I'm gonna send mine in, it needs both the updates.

Thanks Dave.

Yup it is scheduled for delivery on Monday @8pm. So far I am seeing positive findings from those who already have their lens updated.

Hey Randy, update last spring that I didn't send it in for, I needed it for my owls, now another update, not sure if its just for compatibility for the new rebels or what.

Ohhh, O.K., I see now, I found the Tamron site and read about that, I knew about the first, but I was unaware of the second one for selected cameras.
Thanks, Dave! :)

A real "Odd Couple" at the wetlands the other day. This is a heavy crop from a handheld (leaning on a railing) shot on the Sony A6000 and Tamron with adapter, in manual focus, at 600mm. Testing the limits of the lens, camera, and myself in a day of experimentation. Whew. I should not make it so difficult!! Challenging.

Very nice Ed! That's either one large Iguana or a small Gator! :) Nice Egret too.

I haven't sent mine for the firmware update, but I have found a work-around for switching the VC off without using the VC switch on the lens. Since I have stored the settings for BIF shooting on one of the custom modes, I have assigned in this custom mode the "IS start" function to the depth-of-field preview button (page 448 in the manual). This assignment turns the VC off even if the VC switch on the lens is on the "on" position. So, when I switch to the "BIF" custom mode to shoot birds-in-flight, I automatically get the VC off without even touching the VC switch!

I have come to the conclusion that when panning, even with high shutter speeds, having the VC on gives pictures with more blur. Probably this will be "cured" by the new firmware update.

Edit: This is on a Canon 7Dii

The gators are native to S Florida, the iguanas, which are everywhere, are invasive species that have naturalized in many parts of S Florida. Here at the wetlands they eat the wading birds' eggs in the nests. I have witnessed egrets defending their nests against iguana maurauders.

This is the image SOOC, converted to med-res JPG from Sony Raw file. Did some LR adjustments and a crop in PP.

I'll have to check this out but mull it over in my noggin for a while first, I love the idea, but I can't get it into my head... yet.
Thank you for that idea, if that really works, you are a genius! (Not that I doubt you...) heheh

Better yet, could you please explain the steps to do this? I am not fully understanding the "IS Start", I don't know where that is.

I am not a genius, I just try (almost) everything whenever I buy something new, be it a camera, a cellphone, or a TV!

What I said is useful only when one uses a custom mode (e.g., C1) with the settings for BIF/panning shooting.

So, you select all the parameters you need for BIF shooting (e.g., a high shutter speed, the AF settings, etc.), and then you find in the menus the "Custom Control" (see p. 445 in the manual where you find this in the menus). In "Custom Control" you can change what different buttons of the camera do when you press them. Go to the "depth of field preview" button (1st column, 4th row), and change this to "IS start". This means that the VC doesn't engage anymore, you have to press the "depth of field preview" button (somewhere in the front of the camera) to engage it (we don't care about engaging it, anyway).

You save the settings in a custom mode (e.g., C1), then you change the "depth of field preview" button again to something else (so as you have a working VC outside the C1 mode), and, voila, from now on, every time you turn the mode dial to C1, you get not only the various metering, AFing, etc. settings you need for BIF, but also a VC that does not engage, although the VC switch is on the "on" position.

I hope I helped a little!

That reminds the situation with the Green Parrots (Rose-ringed Parakeets) in Europe, they started from captive birds, but now they have naturalized and considered a part of the local fauna.

George,

Really, if this works for me, then it'll really be a big help, and not just me either.
I already use the Custom Controls for certain things, my C1 was already set up for BiF, and another set up for low ISO, low shutter-speed stuff, so I was already set for this except for understanding how you got there.
Right now, I won't be able to test it to see if I have it correct or not, but I will let you know how it works out for me.
(I can't hear the VC working at all at any setting, or with your settings, so I need to check that out and see what's up with that, it's still really early though and I do need to try and wake up...) :)

Thank you, Sir, that was very nice of you to let us know, plus, come back and help me out like that, it is very much appreciated.

To all here, I apologize for the interruption... :)

Randy
