I use the 300 F2.8 L IS Mk1 and the Canon 2 x Mk3 extender. AF slows a touch and you need good light, but it is a good combination.
Attached is the 6th (I think!) image taken with this combination a while back.
Note this is unedited - just scaled for Web as I don't think that a processed image would tell you much.
See what you think.

My primary concern would be for birding. I have a 7D2 and I know im going to do ok with the 7D2 and a 300 with a 1.4 TC. Would be really nice if i could use the 2.0 TC for when I realy need some reach. Gonna be doing a lot of birding soon

So If anyone using a 7D2 and a 300 could post some shots i would Really appreciate it

I don't have the 7D2 so I can't help there.
The 7D2 is a great camera that will AF well at F8 (so F5.6 won't be a problem so long as the subjects aren't too quick!) that will take very good images. I wouldn't worry about your camera in the least!

Your, very sensible, question about the Canon 300 F2.8 and 2 x extender is about the AF and IQ of this combination (incidentally it is very good) all your 7D2 will do is record it rather well! So long as you go for the Canon 2 x Mk3 extender I wouldn't worry about the camera!

P.S. I just re-visited my previous post and must apologize for any confusion caused - that image was NOT shot with my 800mm! It was shot with my Canon 300 F2.8 L IS and Canon 2 x Mk3. If you want let me know your E Mail address (via PM) and I can send you the original RAW file. Sorry I have no idea how the Metadata on that file got changed - now corrected.

No Problem sir

Im probably gonna pull the trigger on the lens tomorrow. Almost went with the new 100-400 but the 100-400 I have is great and in The PNW where i live, November and December is dark. 3200 is very common at F/3.5-4.0 to get a shutter at 1/640-800. Last year I went out with my Sigma 120-300 and used TV mode and had many shots at 3200-4000 ISO to get them at F/3.2. And it was work to keep that shutter above 1/640 later in the day Other guys with the 500 F/4's had the same problem. If we can get to 1//800 its good with the Eagles up here. With a TC im gonna be at F/4 so with my 7D2 I should be golden at F/2.8.........cant wait. Ive waited 6 long years to do this

Just a thought but the 7D2 has Auto ISO and (I believe exposure compensation) in Manual mode. On my 1DX I find this feature helps turn a complicated camera into a point and shoot with control, well worth investigating!
This feature recently allowed me to get 3 or 4 different exposure values (per circuit) on a circling Buzzard so I could compensate for the different exposure as the lighting changed due to the bird's position relative to the sun.
Well worth trying.

its a really light combination for birding when compared to the 500 and the 600. Unfortunately do not use the 7D2 but what I can say is that in good light, the AF speed difference is not as bad as some would put it but in poor light it can really hunt at times. IQ takes a hit but not as much as I would have expected.

Well

I ordered it today. B&H had a 2011 for 3700.00 less than the current model at $6095.00. Its listed as a 9+. so its on the way. Thats a pretty bi difference.

I didnt write that correctly. I got it for 3700.00 for a UZ. Its supposed to be a V2 version. I will see when i open the box. Its rated 9+ by B&H. Israel says its pristine. I have purchased from him before. If its not a V2 then its going back and I will order a new one

keeping my fingers crossed. I saw a video today so I know what to look for when i open it up
