You've got to have a pretty strong level of discipline to hold off pulling the trigger on a 100-400 MkII after subscribing to this thread.

Haha.. it's getting over the WPF - wife permission factor. I just got the 7D2, so I figure I'll wait 6 months before broaching the subject. :D

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I think Pondrader is like me, we'd both prefer a bruin encounter to one of your close up Tiger encounters, much less a Brown.

Are you at least carrying Bear Spray or a Gun; or at least with someone slower than you since you can't outrun a bear?

Nice. I really like the 3rd one. For the first one, unless you are leaving it loose for printing, I would crop it tighter to get most of the two guys in the background out of the photo.

Doc

Thank you. I agree the top one should be cropped a little tighter.

Mmmm no Guy I don't.... never have. I've lived here all my life and have been in the company of bear's so many time I can't count. I have only had to defend myself once in the last 50 years and that was because my wife was cooking french fry's in a deep fryer one night. I'm totally comfortable around them and feel I have a super good understanding of what there thinking. This guy was busy looking for and eating grasses out in the open, not once was he really looking at me even those I made it look so. Obviously I did my job lol. He really didn't pay me much attention. I try to put myself where they will be next not where a subject is so I can get that glance that makes the shot. Thank you for asking....Im sure most say it to there computer screen lol

Scott

I subscribed to KelbyOne last year and watching the big time sports photographers' videos there, I've been brainwashed to shoot tighter and tighter on action shots. Also, they stress faces, faces, and faces in the shots. Level your backgrounds. Wide shots are when your are wanting venue atmosphere type shots. Etc.

A lot of stuff for me to remember when shooting sports. ;)

I do find that you can crop tighter when you are cropping a shot for display. But when you put up some photos for sale and people will be ordering different sizes of prints, you need to crop looser to allow for the different cropping for the various sized prints.

Now if I could only afford that Canon 400mm F/2.8 lens. :)

Doc

P.S. Still waiting for Pondrader to win the lotto and ship me one. ;)
