18-55 (will be replaced with something better)
50mm 1.4
100mm 2.8 Macro
70-300 4 L

This covers all my needs! I'm lusting after an 85mm although I don't really need one.

Current kit:

Sigma 12-24, Canon 28-135IS, Sigma 150 Macro, and Sigma 100-300/4.

If what I read today turns out to be true, then my kit will soon be:

12-24, 30, 50-150, 150, and 100-300, all Sigma.

Not sure anyone mentioned this but. If you have ANY white lens, you owe it to yourself to pick up a 1.4X Extender MKII! It just gives extra value to that already fantastic white lens. Should be realistic enough.

all i really need (probably can complete all of it by the end of the year) for what i do is:

17-40/4L
50/1.8
70-200/4L
300/4L IS

and a TC 1.4x for the 300/4

i already got the 300/4, and 50

I'd probably end up replacing the 1.8 for the 1.4 in the future but I don't really use it all that often to justify the purchase

For general photography, streetshooting, hobby, field and events (and even some indoor) - this combination shared by many covers almost all needs very well:

  1. 17-40L
  2. 24-70L
  3. 70-200L IS
For serious money shots or indoor work (esp with low light); creative work and compositions - only primes for me:

  1. 85L
  2. 35L
  3. 50mm 1.4 (hopefully an L will be released soon!)
  4. 100mm macro
(and of course a serious bunch of lighting equipment!)

17-40/4 for landscapes
24-105/4 IS for walkaround
70-200/2.8 IS for indoor sports/candids.
300/4 IS for outdoor sports and wildlife (w/ 1.4x, 2x II TCs)
100/2.8 macro for dermatology and flowers

I own all but the 300 and that will be coming before my first Alaska trip next month. The top four have to fit in the Tamrac computreker backpack with my 5D and flash. Should be tight.

Right now I have

50mm f1.8 (slightly broken)
50mm macro 2.5 (also slightly broken)
16-35 2.8L
70-200 2.8L

I want to get the 24-70mm 2.8L next, then a 50mm 1.4 (or a 50mm L if they ever make one.) I'd also want the 85mm 1.2L but I heard it's slow (although I'd use it for studio work anyway) and the 35mm 1.4L.

A really nice lens I'd like to have is the 200mm 1.8L although I don't think I'd be buying one any time soon (unless canon released a new updated model, I don't want to spend all that money on a used lens although they do seem to be pretty sweet.)
