Bokeh for a standard lens, it's as good as it gets, hence my love for it as well. Blurring / background isolation, the 85/1.8 has it beat ...

Way back in the film days, I only used primes and that 50mm kit lens I got with my Minolta XD-11 ended up almost never being used. It always seemed to be not close enough or not far enough. Now that I'm in the digital arena, I only have zooms...

Like a few people have stated, on my 60d the sigma 30mm f/1.4 is my most used lens. I only ever use my 50mm on my second camera an only occasionally at that. But if/when I change to FF I'd probably use my 50mm more, or get a the Canon f/1.2 50mm.

Depends what you shoot though, most of my stuff is live bands in really dark venues so I'm forced to use my 30mm mainly because I need to shoot wide open a lot.

Canon EOS 1000d /60d : 18-55mm IS kit lens. Canon 50mm 1.8 MK2. Tamron 55-200mm F4-5.6, battery grip to make my cam look pro..and 30mm Sigma F1.4 recently added

I've avoided responding to this thread for awhile but...
A few years ago I had the Canon 50mm f/1.4 and used it on my 40D. Never could like the lens and sold it off.
Still wanting a 50mm, earlier this year I bought yet another Canon 50mm f/1.4 while on sale to use on my 6D thinking that I might like it more on FF than the crop sensor.
Marginally better on the 6D, I still can't get myself to like it much. IQ at 1.4 is terrible. It doesn't get better until 4.5 or higher.
AF on this one on the 6D is better than I recall with the one that I had on my 40D but not great.
Could it just be me? Possibly.
I can't picture myself eating it but it doesn't get much use.

4.5!? Your lens most be broken or something. There is no prime lens you have to stop down to 4.5 to get a sharp pic, lol. I heard people say it's very sharp @f/2.8

canon 50 1.2
canon 50 1.4
nikkor 58 1.4

all have some "issues" when shooting wide open.
I made some AMAZING images with my 50L, made some money with that lens - for sure.
you can certainly learn how to harness the 50L, and it's worth it.

but I'm avoiding them all, not that I've started over with nikon. sort of a cleansing.

I'll use my 35 Art. my 85, and put a 50 1.8 on my backup body for when I want to hand it over to a n00b to give them some inspiration (the only reason I bought the lens, the body is also FF).

So, I gave the 50 f/1.8 II to my son for use on his SL1. Yes, he likes it and yes he sometimes has focus issues with it. For what it costs and it being his only prime lens and he's a beginner, it's in the hands it belongs.

I did pick up the new 50 f/1.8 STM to see what it was like and ended up giving it to my daughter to use on my old 5D (she is starting to do some professional work and learning with her 30D and my 5D). It's a perfectly fine lens but I very much prefer the 50 f/1.4. The build is better and I like the color and contrast better.

I bought the 50 f/1.4 refurbished direct from Canon years ago. Initially, it did have some serious focus issues. I sent it back to Canon for adjustment and, yikes, it arrived sharp and better all around. It is my go to lens on full frame for group shots. But, in fairness, after picking up the 35 f/2 IS, my 50 f/1.4 is not used all that often for much else. Neither is the 135 f/2 but I am reluctant to part with either of them.

I could not do a side by side comparison on the 50 f/1.8 vs. the new STM version but I do know I had focus issues with the other 50mm lenses noted above. I am waiting to hear from my daughter but she has no complaints so far regarding the STM version.

Maybe Tamron will set the new "normal" with that 45mm f1.8 . . .

my 50 is my least used but I do love the results it gives when the situation calls for it. 18 - 200 and 18 - 35 will be my most used.

As I love zoom lenses my 50mm f1.8 stays in my camera bag most of the time. The 50mm lens I've got is fast and sharp but I really like the ability to frame shots without having to step back and forth.

I purchased a 50mm nifty used from here, because I believed I should. Everyone said you had to have it in your collection. I rarely found a use for it, and didn't enjoy "forcing" myself to use it. I ended up selling it. I don't regret it... and I HATE to sell my gear.

Broken?
No, I don't think so. I just don't like the quality of the pics that it produces.
I bought it because it was on sale and that was a mistake on my part.

I hear the insanity goes 50L, 85L II, 135L, coma

In my case, the road to L led to a 400, and that is catatonic.

The real killers I can't even find to play with -- the old 50 f/1.0 and 200 f/2

spent the vast majority of my photographic life with only a 50mm f/2 and a 135mm f3.5 once i "went digital" i didn't even own a 50mm. I did however keep trying to buy one. Every new lens purchase it was in the conversation. Finally it was between the sigma 35A and 50A. I have never rented just to evaluate a lens, but this time i did. I shot a ton of pictures with both, sent the lenses back and then reevaluated everything.

i went with the 35A.

I use it all the time and really don't plan on buying a "nice" 50. I have however bought an old manual 50 for 40 bucks to use with some video work and for those times in the studio where 50 is needed. As has been mentioned before, for many applications a cropped 35mm image is going to be just fine to emulate the look of a 50. As MP counts grow that will only become easier.
