Looks that if I'm going to an external flash, I should diffuse it with something more than just the stofen diffuser.

I'd say that's pushing the headshot boundary but damn it is beautiful all around! Awesome! Also, your exif says at 1.2. At that narrow I'm impressed both eyes are in focus!
