I am not a genius, I just try (almost) everything whenever I buy something new, be it a camera, a cellphone, or a TV!

What I said is useful only when one uses a custom mode (e.g., C1) with the settings for BIF/panning shooting.

So, you select all the parameters you need for BIF shooting (e.g., a high shutter speed, the AF settings, etc.), and then you find in the menus the "Custom Control" (see p. 445 in the manual where you find this in the menus). In "Custom Control" you can change what different buttons of the camera do when you press them. Go to the "depth of field preview" button (1st column, 4th row), and change this to "IS start". This means that the VC doesn't engage anymore, you have to press the "depth of field preview" button (somewhere in the front of the camera) to engage it (we don't care about engaging it, anyway).

You save the settings in a custom mode (e.g., C1), then you change the "depth of field preview" button again to something else (so as you have a working VC outside the C1 mode), and, voila, from now on, every time you turn the mode dial to C1, you get not only the various metering, AFing, etc. settings you need for BIF, but also a VC that does not engage, although the VC switch is on the "on" position.

I hope I helped a little!

George,

I tried it out on 'things', and it definitely helped that kind of shooting. I haven't had a chance to shoot BiF though, and won't for a few days or so, but I could see that the pictures came out like there was no VC working, so, to me, that is what i needed, I'm not ready to send mine in to have them update it, yet. :)
Thank you SO MUCH again, I appreciate that you went out of your way to help, me, us.
Personally, I still think you're a genius! ;-)a

Finally got some sun and a little time today. Very strong sunlight made things too contrasty, had to tone it down a bit. Many unsharp images especially at 600mm, but a few nice ones. Need more practice and fiddling with the settings. These are at 600mm.

That IS a very nice and sharp shot of the heron!
You look like you are right on top of him... heheh
That beats all of my close-up heron shots, for sure!

These guys sit on the boardwalk railings at the local wetlands, along with the egrets, anhingas, etc, and are so used to people on the boardwalk they don't usually fly away when you approach carefully. Especially on a day like yesterday when there were almost no people there. You can get really close, especially with a long telephoto. It's almost like cheating!! These are wild birds that are habituated to people sharing their wetlands with them. Quite amazing. Some species, like the spoonbills and storks, keep their distance. There are also bitterns, night herons and limpkins but they are secretive and a lot more work to photograph. These tricolors along with the anhingas and the green herons, are the local hams.

Just got my lens back and I noticed that the VC kicks in more quite than before and also no more creeping for now :). Hopefully will have some sunshine later so I can test it out.

I'm also looking forward to see what happens when you go out in the world and use the lens, hopefully it makes a difference. Not that you plan on putting down the 500mm anytime soon... heheh

Thanks for letting us know, Peter.
