I am always the bargain shopper. I love getting stuff just as the latest greatest comes to market, one generation old is generally just great for me. I was looking at the price history of the 5DII and it looked like it went down to about 1500 as canon cleared out its old inventory. Do you think we will see a repeat of this for the 5DIII? Just looking for input from those of you who have seen a few generations of cameras come and go...

I wasn't sure which forum was the most appropriate to discuss pricing... sorry, and please move if this is not the spot.

Thanks,
Kags

Thanks for the input.... I was thinking new with a us warranty, but it seems that Canon has a reputation for servicing the grey-market stuff even though it doesn't have to, so that might be an option.

Shortly before a new model comes out and the old one is discontinued, prices could drop to 55% or 60% or less. The 6D was $2100 at introduction and could be gotten for $1150 last week as part of a printer bundle after a mail in rebate.
The 7D could be had for about 50% of the introductory price.
I like to wait for price drops, and have seen many Canon cameras sell for 50% of their intro price when Canon wanted to clear them out. I expect that the 6D will drop to $1050 and the 5DIII to about $1750 for a USA warranty model.
I wouldn't spend that sort of money on a product with a questionable warranty.

I bought my 6D 3 months after release for $1560. It was an Import model from Getitdigital. I have zero issues buying import for the savings. I later sold it a year after I had it for $1400. Had I bought it new for the 2100 that would of been a pretty hard hit to take.

What I've seen is any new model camera can be had new and/or import for about half price of it's initial release at 4yrs and then at 8yrs another half of where it was at at 4yrs. (although maybe not true I'll explain below)

Right now we are at 3.5yrs on the 5D3 and it can be had for 2000 new which is about 43% off from it's initial release. You give it at the 4yr mark and it'll be right at 50% or 1750 so next March. Now... after 4 more years my math should say around 900 bucks BUT previous model 5D's are going to hold their value and keep a good sandwich of price comparison. Right now the 5Dc can be had about 400 and the 5D2 about 800-1000. You give it 4 more years and I predict this: 5Dc 300, 5D2 600, 5D3 1000-1200 and at that time the 5D4 should drop to around 2k as well.

Just my predictions at least.

If you want a brand new 5D3 for 1500 then your still about 1.5yrs out...

I think as soon as the 5D4 drops it will be $1500. We'll see.

It is hard to tell what the price will drop to and how fast. I got a Canon Pro10 printer with my 6D as a bundle, and the printer cost me zero bucks. A newer printer model is slated to come out soon. You can pick up a Pro100 printer now for $150 after rebate. The Pro10 printer listed at $700 and dropped to zero as part of a camera/printer bundle.
Prices seem to tank when a new model is coming out.
The "old" model camera can do a good job, especially given the price drops. I still use my old crop cameras when I want smaller size, smaller weight or reach. They work, even though they are not the latest out there.

OP appears top be asking about new prices, not used which can eventually hit close to zero :)

For new, depending on model, there is certainly a bottom floor as stock disappears. 1D bodies (other than the MkIII) were notorious for disappearing off shelves, sometimes even before the new model is actually readily available.

Obviously, 5D has not had that same issue.

Wait long enough and it will be $500

This... but it will be a LONG wait. The 5d3 has been out a good 3+ years now--the pricing isn't bad to buy-in at this point... but if you're inclined to wait for the 5d4 (or 5DX, whatever) to hit the market, that would be the best time to buy... unless you're prepared to wait another 3+ years.

Yeah! Just wait for E-mount technology to be phased out, and the body pricing should be close to $0 used :-P

I'm tempted to grab the 1DX when the 1DXII is released. Do you think it is better to purchase it earlier than later when that happens?
