A pair of .303 Lewis Guns on a Scarff ring mount. These are on the Shuttleworth Collections Bristol F2b Fighter. By all accounts a single Lewis Gun on one of these mounts was quite easy to manage, as it is well within the mounts design capabilities. Adding the second gun, although great for firepower, brings the weight very close to the limit of what's possible. I have seen this demonstrated with blanks back in the 70's while flying. The collection used to operate an original WWI LVG CVI, the German equivalent to the Bristol. All the demonstrations were done while doing simple gentle "weaves". In combat the F2b was usually flown just like a single seater, but with the extra crewman in back with rear protection. Not a job I would have wanted, but still maybe better than life in the trenches.
