Contrary to popular belief, the 50L is NOT defective as evidenced by the wonderful images posted here by competent and experienced photographers!

Just stunning!

I'll chip in... Great lens, but to be impartial, nowadays, if you shoot RAW, post processing seems more important than the lens itself.

The second shot is almost too intense. Stunning.

Rubbish wide open? Absolutely not. I keep mine at 1.2 almost all the time, like 99,99% (hell, thats what I payed for!) and I cant praise it enough. This lens is truly magic, especially on FF (perfect match with 6D, even with its "basic" like some says AF system).
Cross posting from https://photography-on-the.net …read.php?t=1339950&page=1, lots of 50L/WO/FF to find there:

Ah! I'd never seen that thread. Apologies for this duplication. It seemed to me that this particular form is where most of the 50L bashing takes place, so I thought I'd try to redress the balance a bit...

Then come join this thread and post more f1.2 goodness - we must fight with "50L is utter shi*" urban legend ;-)a
One private matter Al - you review helped me a lot when I was still not sure about idea of having 50L (because You know, thats a lot of cash), thanks!

yeah, there's no urban legend that the 50L is utter ....

There is a realisation that it is not as sharp as other competitors wide open and that it suffers from focus shift at close focussing distance when stopped down about a stop. The 85L, Otus 55 and Sigma 50 Art haven't helped.

However, there are plenty of proponents of this lens who quickly defend its lack of critical sharpness wide open with the justification of "dreamy bokeh" (one of the side benefits of not being critically sharp). For many, this aspect alone is justification for its price and continued position in the lineup (like the new Nikon 58G). The focus shift from what I've seen is less of an issue at normal focus distances even at the aperture settings which highlight it most. In low light it is reputed to still be the best (EF mount) ~50mm lens for AF consistency, accuracy and speed.

Agreed. It's not the sharpest tool in the shed wide open but I have Sigma 35 & 85 primes for when I want sharp. The 50L just isn't that kind of lens and people that want sharp should go with Zeiss 50 MP or Art 1.4

Well.. my point really is.. why measure it at all?? If it makes pictures you like, that's all that matters. And it makes pictures I like!
