Is the background just to busy/distracting?

I would say yes. And I'll add that there is not enough distinction in pattern/brightness between subject and background, that is, the giraffe does not stand out enough from the background.

It's not an absolute. The background is 'too busy' because the subject doesn't stand out from it - the tones are too similar.

EDIT: Patrick got in before me . . .

Cheers, Damien

Personally, I would dodge the giraffe some. The light under the giraffes chin is a bit distracting though. You could maybe clone some of the background from the top left to replace some of the brighter areas.

Agree with the above comments. If you have LR or ACR I would turn down the highlights, then use an adjustment brush to paint over the giraffe and raise the exposure slightly.

I don't know if the background is too busy, probably yes because the bokeh mimics the giraffes spotting and competes for my attention. The worst thing you could do if your goal is to make the viewer look at the giraffe is to convert it to grayscale. That merely compounds the problem. If the giraffe were its natural color, I would think it would stand out more.

+1

By converting the image to B&W, you've eliminated the best tool to separate the subject from the background.

This might have been an opportunity for some 'color popping' of the giraffe?

much better in color! The bokeh is amazing and the color/background separation is beautiful. Have a glass of wine, my dear :) :p

Maybe a color version would help it stand out more.
