It is about 120 miles southeast of Phoenix. It is a canyon with a perennial stream, which is somewhat of a rarity in the deserts of AZ.
I am a Phoenix native, that has gotten around, mostly north, but I had never heard of this place. That is, until I picked up a copy of the August edition of AZ highways.
It is a very unique habitat with a permit system to help protect it's fragility. There is no trail, but you hike through the stream itself. There is a west entrance, which is much easier to get to, and an east entrance, which prolongs the distance to arrival, as well as having the reputation of needing a high clearance vehicle to travel on. My wife and I entered through the west entrance. We hiked in about 2.5 miles, before we turned around. The drama of the slot canyons increases exponentially as you get closer to the east end of the canyon. We didn't make it far enough, as it was a day hike for us. We are going to attempot the east entrance on our next visit.
Here are a few pics that I liked from the day.
Thanks for checking them out!
