Lightning shots are not difficult to take by any means but there is a learning curve. You need some luck with the aiming and timing. If you have 2 cameras you are golden. You can cover a much bigger area of the sky. You are on the right track.

Keep the exposure time down as much as possible and the ISO as low as possible also. Reducing both is the challenge. It all depends how close and bright the the lightning strikes are. You need enough exposure time to get some scenery as well. The further the lightning the higher IOS you will need to set along with wide aperture.

You pics look sharp, you just need a good bolt. That is the luck part.

I like this shot but it would look better with a portrait crop to exclude the buildings on the right. Thanks for sharing.

N, thanks for the reply. You got some *very* nice shots there!!!! Yep, I've used an intervalometer a few times but my timing of the storms just hasn't been right...yet! ;) I may yet try one of the less expensive triggers from eBay...seems like one basic one that comes as a circuit board kit also comes as an assembled unit. I could probably solder one up (old ham radio guy) but it's been a while since I built anything...might just bite the bullet and order the ready-made unit...maybe.

Take care and be safe with that lightning,
Ed

This one is gathering tons of attention on Ontario Tornado Watch's facebook page. I sent it to them, not expecting to have over 1100 likes within a few hours. And it's only an iPhone panorama shot. I was at work at the time.

This one was over exposed. Everything up to this had been weak, even I was blinded for a second, so lucky it came out at all.

Brilliant sunshine on our side of the lake, armaggedon brewing on the other side, the contrast was so high junior looks superimposed, I had to be really careful in PP as it just didn't look real! Alas we had to do a runner to the car as lightning etc was breaking out, so not the place to be with your family. The bottom pic was it 'warming up'......
