Glad it's okay - got the idea from you ;-)a

I had been using grain settings for a 70's 'film' look mainly and now I see it can add nicely to a painted effect

I normally decrease clarity, sharpening, contrast, and increase the noise slider to create a painted effect - then go to H/S/L and play around.

How I will play with grain settings :p

And there are just snaps as we swung out over Wainui to turn and approach the airport.

You can see the airport about lower mid third. The bottom layer of sea is the entrance to the harbour, and is quite narrow. There's been a few wrecks over the years.

Petone to right of image where many early settlers landed, probably because it's shallow beach by NZ standards. I think that's probably the commuter ferry which goes from Days Bay across to Wellington, instead of going right around, along Petone foreshore and onto Western Hutt road. Wind farm on the hills mid left and across at Makara.

Swinging out to make the turn into the airport:

Just a bit of the Wainui coast:

And nearing the airport - that bit of coast in previous shot is bottom right.

Short trip to Wellington for NZ Nurses Organisation AGM and Conference. Not much time for photos once there, but managed a few from the plane through a dirty window.

Mt Ruapehu on the left and Ngauruhoe - both volcanoes which have a bit of activity from time to time.

I'll be playing too now, as had difficulty with my Anderson Park ones. Reduced saturation, but didn't think of clarity. Might have another go sometime soon.

Lovely - especially the second, but love that back lighting on the water.

And a four shot from hotel window 19 floors up. I had to not look immediately down, as it gave me vertigo. Used the 17 - 50 but should have used a prime and done more takes. That's Petone beach in the mid distance before the layers of hills.

I left the wings in for context, as the images themselves probably not up to scrutiny. But thanks for the thought :-)

Paul,
I'm sure it has been asked before but how do you get those incredible macro shots?
Don

Perseverance, patience, taking time to get to the subject (they often go away as I try to get in close) - stealth makes good practice, and being resigned to the fact that often, for every one good photo, there may be 2, 3 or even more bad ones which cannot be used (usually focus which is highly critical in macro). Macro is hard to do compared to most other genres, but having said that, I'm pretty average at most other types of photography!

Paul.
