So I've always shot professionally with Canon but I've owned a few P&S from Sony and always loved them. As I haven't had a P&S in a long time, I decided it was time to invest in one for trips / general shooting when I don't want to carry the gripped 5D3 + lens. I decided to go with the HX90V for how versatile it is. I'm not expecting the greatest IQ due to the sensor but if it's better than my phone and can do 30x optical zoom in a 4"x2"x1" body (not to mention wifi, gps, and from what i've heard awesome IS) that's good enough to make me happy. Camera should be here Monday or Tuesday, I'll give my opinion after I've used it a bit.

So the HX90V came in today. I've been playing around with it a bit. It's quite the fun little toy. I think the things that have impressed me the most so far on it are the optical zoom (30x in a body almost the exact same size as the rx100 series) and the image stabilization. Here's one of the samples I took right after walking the dog tonight. Keep in mind there was no preparation for this shot. I just saw the moon and shot it. This was shot straight out of camera, no crop or editing, handheld at 720mm equivalent (the farthest the optical zoom will go), f8, 1/200, ISO 400. Image Stabilization was on. It has multiple IS settings but I haven't really messed with those yet to decide how each one works. All I know is it works quite well. If you zoom in you can see quite a bit of noise and some loss of detail, which is to be expected on a 1/2.3" sensor. I will post more shots as I test it more, but for now I think this camera will more than surpass the needs I bought it for.

EDIT: I forgot to mention. One thing I'm not pleased about so far, but can live without. There are no RAW capabilities on this camera. I know most people purchasing this won't ever use RAW but I think it has enough technology packed into the body that RAW would've been a nice edition. I'm not someone who easily gives up control and the thought of the camera processing the image into a JPEG does irk me just a bit. However, I knew there was no RAW when I purchased it and it wasn't a deal breaker then, so I'll get over it.
