Scott Kelby photo walks

I've only just found out that Scott Kelby will be in Sydney for this year's worldwide photo walk. His group is meeting at the Opera House on Saturday morning, but unfortunately it's already full so I can't sign up for it. Has anyone else has participated in these photo walks and if so, what they are like? Is anyone from POTN participating this year, in Sydney or elsewhere? I'll be very interested to see his results from the day.

I only just recently signed up for Instagram (very late to the game I know) and I love following Scott's photos there.. in fact I'm now (dammit) hankering for a fisheye lens thanks to his amazing shots of things like the Paris Opera House.

I went on one a few years ago in Portland, Oregon. We did have a good time, but I didn't sign up for anything "special" (photo competitions and such). It was just for good times! Our meetup was outdoors, though, not an indoors organized thing...

Although you didn't sign up you could still show up if you just wanted to blend in with the group. I've been on a couple of Kelby's walks and nobody has to prove that they signed up. You just won't be able to submit any photo or be part of the "official" offerings.

Thanks guys. There's another one too in a different part of Sydney (Manly) which still had places free last time I looked, but a few things have come up for this weekend so I won't be able to make it anyway. Really looking forward to seeing their results, particularly Scott's.

I try to sign up for one of his photo walks every October. Generally speaking I would prefer to shoot alone because I usually already have an idea of what I want to shoot and don't want to have to compete with other photographers for the ideal spot to set my camera up at. If you go to the right walks, they can be fun though to meet new people.

I'm like you, Corey. I go on the walks to socialize a bit and see what others may find interesting that I missed. I prefer shooting solo for anything more serious.

These events can be cool...for one, as has been said, they are sociable...

I went to my first two years ago and it was great. Big group, everyone friendly. Last year it was horrible, only 3 people showed up. Even though I did so much promo for it and so many people RVSP'd. Really turned me down on the idea that I won't go to another.

I'd rather just do photowalks with friends.

That's certainly a point! A few years ago a group of POTN folks arranged to meet up in downtown Portland, Oregon. There were only a handful of us but we had a blast, doing Street photography and wandering around the waterfront.

In fact, I've had several meet-ups with POTN photogs, with great times, so, yeah!

However, the Kelby meet-up was still fun...!

This was the first time for me to do the walk. I thought that it would be a great way to meet new people who were also interested in photography. However, it was poorly organized and really was not much of a photowalk. The "leader" hired a model for the walk and spent most of the time setting up shots with her. He told the rest of the group where the geographical boundaries were for taking to take photos and then said that we would meet up 3 hours later. I thought that kinda defeated the purpose of a photowalk having a model pose for photos and essentially telling people to go their own way. Most people just ended up wandering on their own so there really wasn't any socializing going on. Fortunately I do not mind being on my own and I was able to get some shots that I liked. It was just another day of me going out on my own to do some shooting. I will give it a miss next year if it's the same guy leading it.
