Just picked up my first ND filter. Couldn't find anything to shoot today, but the view from this overpass:

This looks good, I'm not a pro but if I could give you a little advice with ND filters aways shoot with your lowest ISO available ( 50 or 100) and a little smaller aperture I try to be at least at f11 or smaller, you want to get your shutter speed longer, within reason without cooking the shot until you get a ton of noise. If I'm wrong one of the pro's can reply. Enjoy LE.

Longer than 30 seconds will require a shutter release or intervalometer or some remote device to control leaving it open longer...

Yes sorry I guess I just assumed that was known, I guess for the 30sec. Exposure you could use the self timmer. I have just always had a shutter release so I didn't mention it.

FYI I found a YONGNUO intervalometer on ebay for about $37.00 it is by far the best one I've owned & I've had 4 or 5 different brands & styles. It will even let you take time lapse with it.

Enjoy

Magic lantern is good for long exposures as it has bulb timer. It means you can shoot over 30 seconds without a remote and you dont even have to time it yourself

Thanks guys. The reason for the slightly higher ISO is that I do not have a remote trigger, yet.

Although I hear that Magic Lantern has an intervalometer function built in...

I've never messed with magic lantern but I would recommend getting a wireless remote so you can take it from wherever you are

Depending on your camera, you might not be able to use the latest firmware with ML...IIRC. That might have changed, but that was the case when I looked at putting it on one of my two...can't remember which one now.

Travis, Do you have any experience with the Formatt Hitech 100 x 100mm Firecrest 16 Stop Filter ? It caught my attention today and seems to be pretty nuetral

I have one and it is more neutral than I expected. While not devoid of color cast it wouldn't be too hard to correct... IIRC I posted a split shot from it somewhere let me find it.

EDIT:first post on page 485.

I have a Firecrest 16 Stop ND now. Mid day, I can get 5 minutes. This example is SOOC on both, both are ISO 50, f/8. base exposure was 1/250, and a little over exposed. The 16 Stop Exposure was 300 seconds, 5 minutes, and a bit under. But it shows the color cast...that if you believe advertising it doesn't do....for only needing one filter, sure it works fine...but I don't think I would want to limit myself to only have a 16 stop...I so often use the 3, 6 and 10 alone, and combined...having only one would limit what I can do, especially if the one is a 16 stop...early morning or late afternoon you would end up in exposures that wouldn't' work, they would be too long IMO.

Thanks for posting mate. Thinking about adding this to my big and little stoppers , my thinking being it would give better results than stacking my 10 and 6.
