I spent 5 days searching for moose in northern Maine a few weeks ago before finally connecting on Day 6 in the very early morning. We went out about half an hour before sunrise and found a cow within about 10 minutes, a bull about 5 minutes later, then another cow and finally a bull with a cow shortly after sunrise. Some of these required ISO up to 12,800 and others were at the back edge of clear cuts and took a lot of cropping, so pixel peeping is not advised. They do document what we found, and show the steam rising off the backs of some of them. We had a hard frost during the night, and when the sun hit them it was easier to spot the rising steam than the moose itself against the dark woods behind. Enjoy. John

These are worth getting up early for.

Some of these required ISO up to 12,800

I know it would be a pita, but consider taking a tripod next time you have to shoot very early. Yes, you'll lose some shots due to movement. But you'll get a few that will be worth the aggravation.

Thanks, Frank. I'm so used to shooting handheld (but will brace myself on an available tree or other object if I can) that I almost never even think about the tripod that is usually in the vehicle with me. I had enough time with several of this moose to have set up, would be interesting to compare the results and likely get me considering the tripod option more often in the future! John
