Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary

It is really good at short range, but I have been pleased with longer shots, also. On my 6D, it required no mfa, but requires +3 on my 70D. Going to post some softball shots later that were taken from the outfield.

These were taken this weekend from behind the outfield fence. Handheld. I was roaming around behind the short fence and the pics were taken at different distances. The fence is 220 ft from home plate.

Coupled with your previous shots, and assuming they are all processed similarly, those shots look just as I was seeing. ~400 it is very sharp at any distance. At 600mm is is seemingly sharper at short range.

Really having a lot of fun with this lens!

Act on it you lurkers - awsome lens with great extra features and accessories vs Tamron, not to mention use of the Dock.

Agree on your statement, close and mid range is very good, longer distance can be hard to predict as it seems that atmospheric pollution (like heatwave, smog and such) seem to have more impact.
I even think that in overcast days the images look sharper than in full sunlight.
When doing shots of a soccer match it depends greatly how you position is towards the sun and the players, still learning to find out how this works.

Tried to MFA on longer distance, but this is hard to do.
So i might sent it to Sigma together with my body to have it calibrated.

Still I'm very happy with this lens.

Nice shots mate , great colors and sharpness , any reason why you use f8 on these shots?.

Used my dock today, set C1 to Focus speed-priority & dynamic OS. C2 set to Focus accuracy-priority & dynamic OS.
I'll try both custom settings for an air show tomorrow. Also did a camera MFA at 550mm, my most used FL me thinks.
Best IQ occurs at MFA = -12.

Reading everyone's comments about the dock helped me. Thanks.

My first outing with the below setting did not impress me for focus....
then I remembered that I upped the "focus tracking" in my 70D menu so that did put in another variable. If I recall, the focus tracking has 4 positions and I set it just to the left - not far left.

So, I still have testing to do. Perhaps some of you are familiar with the term focus pumping - its when you are shooting BIF or moving subjects and you intermittently repress the focus button to re-engage it to increase the probability you are in focus on your subject. That is what I had to do with my current settings. On day two - I was more accustomed to it.

F8 just seems to be the sweet spot on my copy of the lens, even though 6.3 is perfectly acceptable for shots like these. Since these are really just snapshots, I set up in Manual with auto ISO and don't adjust much. I don't worry about auto ISO on the 6 D. Thanks for the comment.

Perfect timing, beautiful shots! I love the sky shots also, i didn't think you could get that kind of photo with this lens. I'm going to try my hand at it soon.
