A7R2 question: Do you guys turn electronic first curtain shutter on or off? And what are the benefits of each? That's one thing I don't quite yet understand.

I don't known what the benifit of having it off is but on my A7 it's twice as quiet with it on. Since it's only using the rear curtain. I've always had it on since day 1 but I still find the shutter super loud, even more so than my Mamiya RB67 that has a MASSIVE mirror.

Yeah. It's still pretty loud. Louder than my 6D. But I've never quite understood this whole shutter (first curtain, electronic) stuff..
Mine's been on by default (came this way from the factory). I haven't tried it in the OFF mode yet.

electronic vs mechanical shutter. The electronic will prevent shutter vibrations. downside is it wont expose right for some lenses.

think A7r, it has some frequencies that are known to cause problems, and that's be cause the first curtain shutter is mechanical, and when it does its thing, it causes vibrations. Would be great if sony used full electronic shutters.

Manual says to turn it off at faster shutter speeds, so I turn it off then.

I wish it was fully electronic so we could get crazy sync speeds. I don't even get the 1/250 Sony claims, it only does 1/200 with non sony flashes.

I do know that electronic shutters means rolling shutter issues and the bands under artificial lights (based on the frequency of said lights).
What I'm not clear on is why use or not use the EFCS setting on the A7R2 in a practical sense. Why would I ever want to turn that off?

Do you intentionally allow those highlights to blow out on shots like that? I kinda dig those high key shots for things like food. But my instincts are always to lower highlights in post and then I wonder why I am not happy with my shots. Haha.
