Javapop's situation presents a good question, as most of us shoot in raw, however I have seen some very nice renderings shot as Jpeg, what have shooters out there found as far as picture style that works the best when shooting Jpeg

I take a lot of shots under metal halide lights (with 5d3, not 7d2.) I have found that the lights change color as they get older and they also cycle. So there is no way to get a perfect white balance for the arena. In my case, I find there are basically 3 main colors that I must deal with. What I call normal, the shots that look close when the AWB is applied in Lightroom, green appearing light and orange/red appearing light.

What I do is go to 3 or 4 parts of the track (in my case) and take rapid shots of an x-rite passport. A gray card will work as well but the x-rite allows me to cool or warm the photo if needed. Just hold down the shutter for a second or two and get a good sample of various colors of the lights in the arena. Then when you do your processing, make a user preset in Lightroom for the main different types of lighting you see when you take the shots. Then when you have a shot that looks like it is in the green part of the cycle use that preset, orange/red, the preset for that, etc.

I did this about three times. The lights change every time, but I find once you set up the User Presets the way that works, they are good enough to reuse week after week. Now having said that, I am really pushing the ISO. The lighting I work with is bad so I have learned to be happy with the quality of my shots. At 25,600 one must just learn to accept the shots are not going to look like the shots from 4:30 in the afternoon.

If you are using anti flickr, it should be in theory using the same bit of the cycle for each shot, so similar color. I think the stadium lighting is just really pushing your gear, and their might not be heaps you can do with that gear/stadium combination. Could you try using some flash?

I think the best solution is using a custom white balance or those gray cards such as color checker passport and such, i was shooting in 2-3 stadium and the results as colors/WB are bad, i tried with pp to make less wb issues, but never able to make it crisp vivid colors as in another stadium strong lights.

Also using so high ISO over 6400 or even 6400 sometimes affect the colors too even not that much, but i feel there is also colors noise too.

I used to use imagenomic for noise reduction with my 5D3 but I found that I lost more detail than with my 7D2 whereby I simply use the luminance slider in ACR and it seems to produce better results (to my eye). Am I missing something as I'm no great licks at PP?

Imagenomic gives you a lot of control over various parameters - I'd suggest trying various combinations to see what works best. TeamSpeed has a lot of good NR info - search for some of his posts.

Using 12000 ISO in good light outdoors for a fast SS just does not translate to an indoor hockey arena lighting or pitch black night football game under similar lighting - it just doesn't. The shadows are a mess in these situations the shadow colours just get terrible.

The SS / high ISO stopping the action with decent colours in pulsating lighting is a dance I've played for years in hockey arenas. For a 5D3 that dance ends at 1/1000 3200iso and on a 7D2 I think it ends at 1/1000 2500iso. I have learned that with the 7D2 you can push it higher because it handles NR better than the 5D3 but you are losing colours and texture very very quickly above this - you can however make the pictures look completely fine in smaller sized images and that is what counts most of the time. With the 5DSR and with NR I'm ok at 6400iso for hockey.

One size definitely doesn't fit all situations. I just wanted to point out that in some cases the 7DII does a pretty good job with higher ISOs.

A few years ago I owned a 7D and took so many pictures and was satisfied. Then I came finally into the world of full-frame. I think I got stuck there. I bought a 6D and have been incredibly pleased with it. My bag was filled with multiple lenses so I bought a second 6d. At this writing I miss bird in flight pictures. 6D can cope with this task, but it is limited by its AF system.

I have an offer to trade away my older 6D (with Wifi), more than 1.5 years old to a 6 month old 7D MKII. The thing I will miss is that my current objective is bought after full format even though they can be used with the 7D.

When I started shooting, it was very bird I photographed then I think that it became less and less given to 6D are not as good as the 7D on this so maybe I will open their eyes to birds in flight again thanks to the next generation 7D? One thing is for sure. The combination 6D and 7D MKII is the best combination for me if I had to choose (1DX out of the picture).

In January, I have booked a trip to photograph the eagle from the hide. Perfect with new 7D that case. I own a Tamron 150-600 in telephoto.

I'll be honest, part of my problem in post is that I'm still using aperture. I do have LR; but haven't found a solid work flow, so I have stuck with Aperture.

is this a LR method?
