Another amazing image, David. I'm liking your having given up your other job! How many images was this?

quick day moon shot from today while I was walking to the car

hand held and heavily cropped - 1/320, F8, ISO 400, 400mm with the 100-400L II

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Took these with my 100-400 and new 1.4 extender the other day. Havnt seen any loss of iq having the extender on it. AndI think my handheld shots are getting sharper/better as I learn to hold this camera properly to avoid shake when usingthe longer end of the lens

yep...I think Ive been blessed with a good copy of a 100-400 lens straight off bat....No need for lens MA for either the extender or the lens itself. It just seems spot on......well spot on when I get the focus correct that is :) .

cheers

Too sharp, IMO. The throat feathers are extremely aliased in #2. 50MP and no AA filter doesn't cut it, IMO, with a very sharp lens that is both focused and stable.

If I had a 5Dsr, I'd be avoiding maximum sharpness. We need hundreds of MPs before we can safely drop AA filters for all lenses and situations.

I'd be using it with a 2x TC, for when DOF is needed and the f-number can go high, in general, when lenses are a little soft wide-open, etc.

Well....I must have terrible eyesight because even when I zoom #2 to a 100% all I see on the throat feathers is either sharp feathers or OOF feathers from the DOF focus finish......So not sure about äliasing as I cant see it anywhere?....And if by AA on the feathers you are referring to some of the feathers that are not dark blue well I looked at them at a 100% and like all wrens they have splattering of white color tinges on some of the dark blue feathers as they also have with white coloring on some of the light blue feathers that can be seen in the crop below...... This is normal with Blue Fairy Wrens ...some have more than others etc ....
Also see some minor chromatic aberration that needs fixing but still cant see AA/

And if by the remote chance the AA you mention is the white looking individual feathers appearing slightly rough on edges at 100% well I will live with that because even at a 100% crop its only very minor and if if the feathers wernt a white color againts the blue you would never know it was there .....I would happily PS it as against having a soft look that an AA filter would give to that

Bottom line is the images to me look sharp without looking over sharp...And the lack of AA helps negate any extra softness the addition of the EXTENDER Brings ..And I would take a sharp image off a 5dsr any day as compared to a camera with an AA filter like my 5DMk2 ....Only reason they are on there(AA FILTERS) are for moire and thats fixed in post. ANd Ive only seen moire once since getting this camera so even thats a remote chance Im happily prepared to accept in order to get the extra sharpness a non AA ( or AA bypass) camera like the 5dsr gives ......

And anyway...the Bayer Array that started this AA filter requirement will be a thing of the past in 5 years time as manufacturers develop better sensor technology as we are now seeing with co's like Fuji with their xtrans sensors like in my Xt1 , Sigma with their Fovean sensors, etc etc......

and here is the original file......In my book thats not bad sharpness and resolution IQ an an image so heavily cropped as the image above ( ORIGINAL IMAGE #2)

And you can also see how narrow the DOF is by looking at Wrens claws below ...they are OOF as are half his neck and breast feathers

It's probably the natural colors of the feathers, just on first glance it looks like digital artifacts.

Amazing detail. Looks good on my monitors. No sharpness artifacts, even on 4k.
