Retinex, Noise Reduction, tone curve, rotate, and undistorted in Rawtherapee.
Color of bushes and trees airbrushed in GIMP, cars obliterated.

I played with it for a few minutes and here is my rendition: straightened, enhanced some selective colors that really brought out the clouds, added a gradient and something else...I wish I remembered what I did before flattening the image :)

For the Trick or Treat period... just to theme it up a bit.... rotated, selective coloring and saturations, put my Aunt Hilda into the picture, and leveling/constrast/sharpening when done.

Straightened, got rid of the cars, then tweaked colors and contrast to taste.

Very nice everyone. I had to do a lot of back-and-forth comparison, but rblint's edit best represented my vision when I shot the photo.

Congratulations Mark!

Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Rules are simple:

  • Download the image file from the current week
  • Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (1 entry per week)
  • The owner of the original image will choose a winner
  • The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc (Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

This week's challenge: This one should present some NR challenges(ISO 1600, crop camera, and underexposed), let's see your best NR actions. Good luck to all.

Retinex uniform, directional pyramid denoise Luma 10, Chroma 12, further wavelet denoise at levels 1 and 2.
Masked in noisy results from Mantiuk '06 to retain good water spray. Chroma bumped. Exposure levels untouched besides a very slight positive tone curve.

Just out for a friendly wildlife feeding...

(lowered contrast, lowered highlights, raised shadows, removed noise, added a friendly critter, and sharpened a bit)

Ok, I guess it's time to judge. I had hoped to get more than two entries but we'll just go with what we've got.

Both entries were excellent, but I've got to give it to TeamSpeed who demonstrated his mastery of NR and I loved the alligator.

So over to you TS, and congratulations.
