Thanks!

I cut the top of the bulb off (you can see it laying next to the bulb in the shot). Traditional bulbs use an inert gas (halogen usually) to prevent the tungsten from igniting. Remove the top and now the tungsten can mix with the oxygen in the air and, poof, up it goes. The reaction is pretty much instant and only lasts a second, if that.

set the camera to high speed burst, press the shutter and then plug in the bulb. I burned up three bulbs trying to get this one. Funny fact, the glass on these things is tough. I couldn't get it to break, even beating it with a framing hammer hard enough to make everything on the table bounce. I ended up having to cut the tops off the bulbs with a Dremel. I cut the plug off of a $1.50 extension cord and soldered the wires to the base of the bulbs, then used a bit of armature wire to hold up the bulb. Then a shot of a bulb without the wires just to get a clean base.

I have no idea how you dream this stuff up.....Not only are your concepts insanely creative but your lighting is perfect! If you are not making money doing product photography this would certainly be a career option. This said, my guess is you do something else for a living that pays better!

Thanks! :-) I have no idea where the concepts come from either, I just wish they'd come around a bit more often.:-P

No, I don't make any money from this, it's just a way to pass the time. ;)

Yeah, My wife is stationed over at 29 Palms. It's definitely a bit different out here relative to what I'm used to. My girls don't like it, they have no one to play with out here.
Did you make it up here for the Art Tours this past weekend?

No i didn't. I never seem to get it together. Did you participate?

I understand why you spend a lot of time indoors in your studio!

This last is really brilliant just knowing the science.

No. I didn't even know it was going on until last Tues. My girls have ballet on Tuesdays and there is an art store next door to the dance studio. When we were talking to the owner he mentioned the art tours to us. We spent all day Sat. driving around up here visiting painters. Man, I didn't realize just how many of the roads out here are just paths cleared through the desert. It made for some interesting drives from one home to another. :-P There was some interesting art though.

I might try to participate next year, but it's expensive. These people had their homes opened up with artwork hanging everywhere. Business cards and brochures, snacks, drinks. It's like hosting an all day party full of random strangers, only you have to supply the art and the food. I'm not sure I could afford to print up enough work to make it worthwhile, but it'll be in the back of my mind through the year this year.
