A question for you guys instead of sharing a pic.

I just ordered my first DSLR (a Canon 70D) and I'm trying to assemble some of the basic gear that I'll need.

I'll be going to events like Road Racing at Road America, autocrosses, and some rally races.

For panning shots like these will a monopod help me that much?

I have seen people shooting with them at Road America before and I'm curious if they would be useful for shooting motorsports.

Yes and No

If you are using big heavy lenses then a monopod will help to support the weight of the lens. But if you are using small light lenses then a monopod will interfere with the panning action.

Football is a very simple game. Twenty-two players chase a ball and Germany always win.

I don't pan with a monopod I find them limiting to my range of motion and smoothness.

Me too, even with my biggest lens (120-300). Not to say I won't try to find a spot where I can rest things from time to time

One of my few racing shots, but not slow shutter. This one is at 1/1250 sec.

I give kudos to the photographers in this thread (fantastic photos) that can do the slow shutter pan. I am horrible at it, and would assume it takes "a lot" of practice.

Do most of the motorsports shooters here use burst when shooting, or single shot? That may be a stupid question, but if I don't ask, I don't learn. Thanks.
