Thanks, now just to save some money and get a longer lens. I had wanted a 300 f2.8 then a friend bought the Sigma 150-600 Sport and swears by it, but I have had undesirable results with the Sigma 70-200 and kinda told myself I would stick to Canon for my telephoto lenses but Iknow I want a lens longer than the 70-200 I tried aIa 100-400 ver 1 but II didn't like the push pull design or the sharpness.

i have another question similar to the camp fire shot, I took my daughter and a couple of her friends out for senior photos and the sky was,T blazing with color but it did have a nice orange stripe at the horizon ( orange is a school color so it would have been fitting ). But when I took the photo the sky washed out to a light blue. I think I made a couple of errors but I'm not sure.
1. Spot metering instead of evaluative and the camera read their faces and kind blew out the sky, not that it is all white but lighter, and their faces are a little under exposed so I think I blew that.
2. I should have used a fill flash, but I left my flash at home.

Thanks for any help.

Gary the new 100-400II is an amazing lens - and 'corrects' the push-pull design while being amazingly sharp. I had a go with a mate's sigma 150-600 on his D810 and was not that impressed. I am not sure what was going on but shots were very, very soft. I have a Sigma 120-300 OS, while there are absolutely zero complaints about sharpness and IQ, it simply cannot keep up with the canon in terms of keepers while AF servo tracking. Not to mention weight!

I find it interesting that the majority of the shooters are in your face extrovert characters, yet the two ladies on the right both turn away at the shooting moment.
never the less a snapshot of the range of charactors and a couple of dollars of equipment for us to look at.:-)

...How the comparison of the 400 f 5.6 L and the 400 DO can conclude that the 5.6 is sharper from my observation and huge experience of 1 hr is BS. The 400 f5.6 at 5.6 is very sharp I have a couple of years shooting to prove to myself that it is a very good lens, the 400 mm f4 DO is a quantum leap increase in in my experience...

Just want to be clear, you are saying that the 400 DO is much sharper than the 400 5.6, correct? What do yo plan to do with the 400 5.6? Also, did you hand hold or use a tripod with the 400 5.6?

Thanks

I have shot about 1000 images now with the 400 f4 DO mostly hand held 90% approx and the amazing thing is the sharpness when I put them on light room, in spite of feeling the 400 is like a paint can in diameter.
The 400 f5.6L is a great lens and I shoot mainly primes couple that with the 1DMk4 I seldom miss a shot except for my clumsiness, or lack of reflexes.
regarding the 400 f5.6 I have decided to sell it to fund a 1.4 converter and perhaps a lens coat of some type as I am experiencing a further distance of safety from the birds that I have been targeting( maybe 5-10 mtrs.)
I shot some small birds diving into the sea and appearing rather small yet when I crop the birds to 1/10th to 1/4 of the frame the birds is still in focus.
I use a mono pod with the 400 f5.6l and the difference is evident as with the 400 f4.0 DO. I have a bsic ball head and it is not the best for staility but in some instances the mono pod is very useful.
Bear in mind that is only my assessment and I have been astounded when I shot some flowers had held and the DOP which the DO provides.
Here is one of my hand held shots
