60D users, friends and their random OT B.S. (III)

Kind of surprised that seemingly no one offers these grips in anything other than black. I'm kind of leaning toward that tan leather look, but the gray ones give off a nice "industrial" sort of vibe. I'm sure they could be molded in color but most vendors probably don't want to fool with that. The black ones they're already selling are being used to repair damaged grips and not to people looking to redecorate their camera.

My grips are still in good shape, but there are some paints and dyes made to work on rubber. If I could find the type of material the grips are made of I might get some of the paint, buy a set of new grips and do some experimenting. If the paint didn't bond well it wouldn't be worth messing with.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. I've just spent the past few hours relaxing and skimming its content. It's good to see an active group of 60D users.

Sadly, for me, in August of 2014 my much enjoyed 60D left for college with my graphic arts majoring god-daughter. while the replacement 70D is nice, I was surprised how much I missed that 60D. I've tried understanding why - with limited success. Perhaps the 60D just never seemed to get in my way.

While I was originally content with the 60D as my only crop sensor body, the 70D begat a 40D (as 2nd body), then the 1D3, which begat a fuji X100s (street use) which begat an SL1 (wife/cfo/sherpa) which begat an M3 system (japanese imports). The 7D2 for the new 100-400 II is on this year's black friday list.

Then 3 weeks ago, there was a listing for a used 60D w/ef-s 15-85mm is usm (Thanks - Harold!) - on this forum. And yep, shortly thereafter - my second 60D arrived.

I'm glad it's back, and I look forward to following this forum!

Glad to see I am not the only one still grasping this digital gem...

Well the one paint I found that might work for painting the rubber camera grips runs $60+ a pint... So I don't think that's going to happen.

But while looking around online for the paint I found this rather handy looking material. Looks like it's been around for a couple years but this is the first I'd seen or heard of it.

Haven't tried it myself yet, but it looks like something that you might want to keep in your camera bag or glove box.

Good job and welcome back Dale! I know the feeling, I sold my 60D awhile ago and still miss it. My current gear is great, but the 60D will always have a place in my heart. It was my first XXD body, coming from the Rebel T1i. I bought mine when they were new, and being referred to as "the super rebel" and a travesty to the xxD line. I never understood that, but it was of no consequence to me.
I loved it, it did more that what I even realized it could do, and I finally sold it when I realized I hadn't picked it up in awhile. I figured someone else could enjoy it and give it the love I wasn't giving it at the time. Looking at the images I created with it, it definitely held it's own!

I was originally trying to stay with more muted, organic colors. But I've got to admit that this red is starting to grow on me.

I know. I know. It looks like I'm posting someone else's pictures. But they're really mine! See, they've got my name right on them. They just look like somebody else shot them.

Picked up a Yongnuo YN565EX flash about a month ago and finally got a chance to put it to good use at a family Thanksgiving dinner. You may have seen some of these folks before in my photos. They're a great group of willing models and not at all camera shy. Which was helpful since I had a lot of experimenting to do.

I knew my shots should be better with a proper flash. I just didn't realize how much better. The biggest help may have been that my cousin's reception hall has a low, white ceiling. Don't get much better than that.

Now I've got to learn to pay more attention to the backgrounds while I'm composing. And I've still got some mixed lighting issues to deal with. The right colored gel on the flash might take care of that. But for the most part I'm quite pleased with the way this is going. Plenty of room for improvement though, so feel free to toss out any beginner's tips you can share.

Here's the last couple of shots I finished working on. A lot of what I shot was too dark with the flash set with no exposure compensation. Correcting that in DPP left me with a bit of noise in the shadows but it cleaned up pretty well. So there's a lesson learned there. ETTR, eh?

This is the shot that really stunned me, and I mean in a good way. But I know it was more luck than skill. Clean background, flash mounted on-camera bounced off the ceiling, no reflections off her glasses and I hit the focus pretty good. I may have to go back and look at my EXIF data to make sure I took this! And this is with the EFs 18-200 kit lens. I don't think I could be much happier with the results for my first outing with a real flash.

Nice shots Clay! You did really well with the flash as well. I'm still hit and miss with the flash. I find I get better images with the bounce off of a wall or ceiling too. I'm hard pressed to find any noticeable noise in any of them, but then I'm usually looking at the subject and not the shadows

Thanx, Jay. I shot some with flash years ago with 35mm, even a few small weddings, and had pretty decent luck. Though I was kind of walking on eggs until I got my proofs back. The instant feedback would be the real benefit of shooting digital.

Most of these shots I took 2 or 3 times, with direct flash, maybe with a flash diffuser, and then bounced off the ceiling. I just wasn't paying enough attention to my histograms while shooting. All I knew was that the direct flash shots looked like they were taken with the pop-up flash and the bounced shots looked much better.

Since switching to digital I've been shooting mostly outdoors and ambient light stuff. Using a decent flash again seems to be a whole new learning curve. I eventually learned from the members here to overexpose a bit when shooting low light and high ISO stuff to help keep the noise under control. I wasn't thinking about it also helping with flash shooting too. The 60D does a good job of keeping noise under control but I could still see it in some areas when I was viewing things at 100% in DPP. I didn't take very much of an N/R adjustment to clear most of it up.

Keep plugging away with your flash shooting, keep a eye on your histograms and try shooting maybe 1 stop overexposed or so. I think it will help more mostly with the bounced shots from what I saw in my pictures.
