When one turns off the electronic front curtain shutter, I presumed that it would shift to a mechanical front and rear curtain. But when I turn it off, it actually gets smoother and my flash sync speed is worse. It almost sounds like a fully electronic shutter. What am I doing wrong? I'm trying to get the maximum sync speed and I'm still noticing a slight black bar on my images when using a cable to my strobe.

I guess I'm wondering how I get a fully mechanical shutter.

What sync speed is giving you the black bar? If its 1/250 it could be your your triggers. Jim Kasson posted measurements showing that the sync speed is 1/300s and people have reported 1/250 with sony flashes with no issues. Personally I use 1/160 but havent actually tried faster

front curtain off is fully mechanical. Front curtain on is electronic front and mechanical rear. Silent mode is electronic front and rear.

No triggers. It's on my ABR800 ring flash. It's a pc sync cable attached to a hotshoe adapter. I don't know if there's any latency involved in that, but it's better than when I was using a pocket wizard directly cabled to the strobe (no radio signal).

What's weird is that when I use the EFC, I can feel the vibration from the rear curtain when I shoot. HOWEVER, when I turn off the EFC, I don't feel any vibration at all. This seems strange as I assume this setup is using the full mechanical shutter.

I just got A7RII along with 85mm batis and 35mm f1.8 to play with for 2-3 days. Reading the manual and trying to figure out things. The back button focussing button seems very small and shutter half press, full press seems different from the canons that I am used to. Hope to get some pictures over the weekend.

excellent, excellent work

i also love this camera and lens combo - the 85L & 135L are now my goto lenses on the A7Rii

i think you could also do a more 'poping' image by increasing the whites and playing with luminance values

what aperture was the first image shot at - 1.4?

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.
