Flash is your only real option to help in those situations. There are some other options, but with either a big price tag, or large compromises, such as using fast primes like an 85 1.8 or 200 f2, but your talking big money and missed shots due to no zoom and razor thin depth of field.

Depending on the location, a couple 600ex's or Chinese knock-offs pointing at the ceiling, or cross lit from the top of the seating can add a lot of light.

Finally settled back home and its winter!
The trip goal was owls but CR is far richer in bugs. Insects, macro, landscape weren't the goal but one couldn't help
but get a bug or two-

Great shot,,! Why is back of head and upper neck look so blurry? referring to the blue heron shot.

Yeah!! I had to shake off a little rust but I can still shoot basketball. ;) A few from last night.

One thing I need to remember when using two camera bodies shooting basketball sitting on the floor with no straps on the cameras. I have a tendency to hit the wheel on the battery grip with my leg when swtiching back and forth with the cameras and accidentally changing the shutter speed. I need to keep checking it to make sure. ;)

OK here's one pushing the limits of the 300mm by using the 2.0TC. It took an hour to find him and another to get close enough for this grab. Luckily he sat long enough for me to get the tripod set up, you can't tell but this shot was in a strong rain, also when you see this bird you are gauranteed snakes are close-

ISO 12800 f2.8 1/40th is quite low indeed. That is going to be a tough situation to mitigate, I would think, unless the exposure is still to the right, where you can work with it and bring it down a little during post processing.
