I had a very busy fall season (for me) -- mostly Seniors. I would love to get more of them in for July & Aug., but everyone books Sep & Oct because they want that gorgeous New Hampshire fall foliage. I don't blame them. Other than clouds, we had a good day. Here is a sampling of Jeremy, Class of '16. Ask me anything!

Great shots!

I've always been curious though, what is this Senior portriat genre? I see a lot of (mostly American) photographers talking about Senior portraits, is it one of those traditions like homecoming? If so what for?

When I was that age you never would have gotten me or any of my friends to willingly pose for a camera, let alone actually book a session! It's interesting! :-)

Hi Ryan,

It appears to be mostly an American tradition that goes back to before my own generation. Usually the parents investigate setting up the session, though the Seniors seem more involved than they used to be. It's a way to remember the milestone of finishing school and, then, entering adulthood. Sort of a last time portrait session to capture that time in their lives. Very common in the US and in some regions more than others. :)

Thanks, all! Canon rookie, I could try to work on removing that, but would be tricky. I was hoping it looked like him leaning against it (instead of it coming out of his head) because you can see it going down behind his neck, but looks like not necessarily so. Thanks for the feedback and I will look at that photo again. :)

Oh that's quite a lovely idea! Thanks for explaining :-)

I think you've done really well with the shots, I think guys are really quite difficult to shoot but you've made it look easy here!

Well done. Didn't realize it was a mostly American phenomenon

I really like the bridge shot, it's much more of a fashion style portrait than I'm used to seeing, which is refreshing. Actually, having seen a lot of senior portraits, anything that's not a girl lying on her stomach in the grass with her feet up in the air behind her is refreshing... but these are especially so.

Thank you, all!

And, absplastic, I really appreciate that, though I do have to admit to a few girls on the stomach shots in my portfolio. :) This year, I have had a lot more guys than girls, so great practice.

Thanks so much and, yes, it's really tough with wardrobe. Only so much I can say and do. :/

You have some nice series of shots. I would recommend that you not have your male seniors push their hands completely into their pockets. They look better when you can see some part of the hands, so most people have them leave their thumbs out of the pockets.

Canon 7D, 5D, 35L, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 135L, 200L, 10-22, 17-55, 70-300, 100-400L, 500D, 580EX(2).
Sigma 150 macro, 1.4X, 2X, Quantaray 2X, Kenko closeup tubes, Yongnuo YN685(3), Yongnuo YN-622C-TX. Lots of studio stuff.

Thanks, Bob, and you are absolutely right! I was unhappy to not have noticed it at the time (sadly, a consequence of the chilly air.) Will be more diligent in the future. :(
