Technique: It was early in the morning and this Wool Carder Bee was having a tough time getting its metabolism going. It went from being active and walking around the flower to clamping onto a petal and snoozing. I was holding onto the stem of that flower with my left index finger and thumb, and resting the lens on that same hand to keep everything steady.

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F16, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 2x and 4x) + a diffused MT-24EX. These are single, uncropped, frames taken hand held.

Technique: Sometimes the subject I'm shooting gets so use to me being close that it just goes about its business as if I'm not there. All I had to do is set the camera to under expose the natural light in the background, and I shaded the subject so that the flash was the only significant light source on the mantis (to freeze motion).

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens with 25mm of extension + a diffused MT-24EX (flash head "A" set as the key and "B" as the fill, with the key on a Kaiser flash shoes). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Thanks Bas and Denise 8-)

The mantis shot has taken off on Flickr -hit Explore currently at #47 for the 21st of November with almost 39,000 views and over 600 faves. Always surprises me when it happens cause I don't have time to play the "social game": There is no legion of people waiting to comment on my photos because I'm commenting on their images cause I don't have time for it.
